The August 2026 night sky features a rare sequence of events, headlined by a Sturgeon Moon and partial lunar eclipse on Aug. 28, a total solar eclipse on Aug. 12, and the peak of the Perseid meteor shower, offering a dense window of astronomical activity for observers globally.

August 2026 is an unusually crowded month for stargazers. While the month opens with planetary alignments, it culminates in a complex lunar event where the full moon coincides with a partial eclipse. This sequence is punctuated by a total solar eclipse that brings a historic astronomical event to Europe, though the visibility of these phenomena varies sharply by geography.

The Sturgeon Moon and Partial Lunar Eclipse of Aug. 28

The full moon of August, known as the Sturgeon Moon, will occur at 12:18 a.m. on Aug. 28. This name originates from Native American traditions, referring to the time when giant sturgeon are most easily caught in Lake Champlain and the North American Great Lakes. According to The News Journal, these living fossils can reach lengths of over 6 feet and weights of 200 pounds.

This lunar event is not a simple full moon. It triggers a partial lunar eclipse visible across the Americas and parts of Europe and Africa. During the maximum point of the eclipse, up to 96% of the lunar disk will be immersed in Earth’s inner shadow. This will cast a blood-red hue over the moon, leaving only a thin silvery crescent visible on the outer edge.

Viewers in the U.S. will see the moon rise over the eastern horizon at sunset on Aug. 27. Those in New York will see the lunar disk reach 100% illumination at 00:18 a.m. BST. The moon may appear larger due to the Moon Illusion or take on a yellow-orange color caused by Rayleigh scattering as it sits low on the horizon.

Total Solar Eclipse: A Historic Return to Spain

Earlier in the month, a total solar eclipse will occur. There is a slight discrepancy in reported timing: one source reports the event on Wednesday, Aug. 12, at 17:46 UTC, while another source states it occurs in the early hours of Thursday, Aug. 13, at 00:46 WIB.

The event is historically significant because for the first time in over a century, the mainland of Spain will be crossed by a total solar eclipse.

While the total eclipse is a spectacle for those in the path, many other regions will see a partial eclipse. However, the event will not be visible from Indonesia, as the country will be on the side of the Earth facing away from the sun during the eclipse.

The Perseid Meteor Shower Peak

The solar eclipse coincides with the peak of the Perseid meteor shower. Active from mid-July to late August, the Perseids are considered the best meteor shower of the year. They result from Earth passing through debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle, which last passed near Earth in 1992.

Observers can expect 50 to 100 meteors per hour. These are characterized by bright streaks and fireballs—larger explosions of light that last longer than average meteors. The peak is expected on the night of Aug. 13, with the mornings of Aug. 12 and 13 offering the best viewing. Because a new moon occurs on Aug. 12, the sky will be optimally dark, enhancing the visibility of the meteors for those in the Northern Hemisphere.

Planetary Alignments and the Summer Triangle

Beyond the eclipses and meteors, August offers specific windows to view planets and constellations. Mercury reached its greatest western elongation on Aug. 2, making it most visible in the morning. Venus will reach its greatest elongation on Aug. 15, allowing for nighttime observation toward the east.

Additionally, the binary star system Alpha Virginis, or Spica, will be visible to the upper left of the moon.

Practical Impacts: Fishing and Observation

The extreme gravitational pull during these lunar phases creates practical effects on Earth. For anglers, the windows of Aug. 10–14 and Aug. 26–30 are considered priority periods because the stronger tidal currents can make predator fish more aggressive. Specifically, the period around the Aug. 28 full moon is noted as a jendela emas second window for targeting fish like grouper or white snapper during the night, dawn, or dusk.
