SDSS Data Release 20 Provides Unprecedented All-Sky View of Black Holes

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey has officially published its twentieth data release, introducing an unprecedented all-sky spectroscopic view powered by its fifth-generation mapping campaign. The new dataset marks a major structural expansion by incorporating optical spectrograph observations gathered by the BOSS instrument at the Las Campanas Observatory in Chile alongside continuing operations at the Apache Point Observatory in New Mexico.

In total, Data Release 20 features over 3.3 million optical spectra spanning 500,000 galaxies and 1.5 million stars. The release includes a three-to-four-fold expansion in data on supermassive black holes compared to the previous release, driven primarily by the Black Hole Mapper program.

Unlocking the High-Energy Universe With eROSITA

A core highlight of the twentieth data release is the SPIDERS program, which matches SDSS optical spectroscopy with high-energy sky maps produced by the eROSITA mission. By pairing these datasets, researchers secured optical identifications and precise distance measurements, or redshifts, for approximately 200,000 X-ray targets. Active supermassive black holes, quasars, galaxy clusters, and active stellar systems make up the vast majority of these targets.

According to SDSS-V Director Juna Kollmeier, Quasars have long been known to vary, and it is extremely exciting to be at the point where we can use those variations at scale, across multiple frequencies, to learn more about how black holes grow and evolve over cosmic time. Kollmeier also noted, The combination of optical and X-rays is extremely powerful, and we are proud to work with the eROSITA team on this cross-survey collaboration.

Dr. Andrea Merloni, eROSITA Principal Investigator and BHM Survey Scientist, described the milestone by stating, This release marks the culmination of more than a decade of joint planning and scientific exchange between the German eROSITA Consortium and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Merloni added, With DR20, we demonstrate not only that combining the X-ray and optical spectroscopic data opens up new and original scientific perspectives in astrophysics, but also that large, international and diverse collaborations can effectively work together for years towards a common goal.

Tracing Supermassive Black Hole Growth and Quasar Variability

By calculating total accumulated black hole growth over cosmic time, researchers determined that soft X-ray-selected objects account for only a small fraction of local black hole mass. This calculation implies that 70% to 90% of total supermassive black hole growth occurred behind thick clouds of gas and dust or during phases where X-ray emissions were suppressed.

To study processes near accretion disks that cannot be directly imaged, SDSS-V utilizes time-domain spectroscopy. Through Reverberation Mapping, repeated spectra track light travel delays between the central accretion disk and surrounding gas clouds to yield direct geometric mass measurements. Additionally, the All-Quasar Multi-Epoch Spectroscopy program monitors changing-look quasars, binary black hole candidates, and gas outflows.

Public Access and Robotic Operations

These observational advances depend on the Robotic Focal Plane System deployed on 2.5-meter telescopes at both observing sites. All products from the twentieth data release are fully open to the public through the Science Archive Server, Catalog Archive Server, and updated web platforms including Zora and Valis, supported by tailored fitting catalogs and Jupyter Notebook tutorials.
