Electronic Arts has completed its acquisition by a consortium including the Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners, transforming the gaming giant into a private company and removing its stock from the Nasdaq exchange following shareholder approval in December 2025.

The gaming industry has shifted on its axis as Electronic Arts completed its transition to a private entity, backed by a consortium of heavyweight investors. The deal was announced on Monday following an agreement struck on September 29, 2025, and subsequently greenlit by company shareholders during an extraordinary meeting on December 22, 2025.

Under the terms of the finalized transaction, shareholders will collect 210 dollars in cash for every single share they held up to the operational close.

Inside the Investor Alliance and Leadership Vision

The consortium pulling the strings behind the buyout consists of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners. Turki Al-Nowaiser, deputy governor and head of international investments at PIF, framed the purchase as a natural extension of a long-term relationship.

Turki Al-Nowaiser, deputy governor and head of international investments at PIF, stated that as a minority investor in the company for more than five years, they have a deep understanding of EA’s unique platform and its massive global sports and entertainment franchises and iconic intellectual property.

Al-Nowaiser emphasized that sports and entertainment rank among the fund’s top strategic focuses and fastest-growing sectors globally, positioning the consortium as a dedicated long-term partner capable of driving sustainable innovation. Meanwhile, EA chairman and chief executive Andrew Wilson noted that the company is stepping into its next chapter backed by partners who share its core ambitions.

Andrew Wilson, chairman and chief executive of EA, said the company is entering its next chapter from a position of strength with partners who share their vision and ambition.

Wilson pledged that the studio will invest boldly, accelerate technological innovation, and build the upcoming generation of interactive experiences for hundreds of millions of players. Silver Lake chief executive Egon Durban added that the coalition intends to invest heavily in the publisher’s expansion, specifically pointing to what artificial intelligence can accomplish for game development and overall player immersion. Jared Kushner, chief executive of Affinity Partners, underscored that EA has crafted stories, characters, and communities that weave directly into the daily lives of hundreds of millions.

Sportswashing Debates and Global Reach

While executives champion the economic growth and technological potential of the buyout, the acquisition arrives loaded with distinct geopolitical baggage. The Public Investment Fund, controlled by prince Mohammed bin Salman, has injected capital into high-profile sports and entertainment properties over recent years. From a £300m takeover of Premier League club Newcastle United to funding four separate clubs within the Saudi League, these capital deployments frequently draw accusations of sportswashing—a tactic critics argue uses major athletic and entertainment ventures to promote a positive public image and distract attention from human rights issues.

Although the Saudi Arabian government consistently rejects those allegations, observers point out that acquiring EA offers an avenue for cultural projection. As noted by Osborn, the crossover between gaming and sports—which also includes Saudi Arabia hosting major esports events like the 2025 Esports World Cup—gives the state a direct line to massive consumer bases.

That immense footprint raises broader questions about state influence over cultural mediums. As experts surveying the landscape emphasize, a state seeking to shape global perceptions now commands an asset with a verified reach spanning billions of people worldwide. Compounding these concerns, human rights watchdogs frequently spotlight the Saudi government’s record, referencing findings such as a 2019 United Nations report stating that the state of Saudi Arabia bore responsibility for the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi—allegations that the kingdom has repeatedly denied.

What Comes Next for the Gaming Giant

With its shares officially delisted from the Nasdaq, Electronic Arts operates entirely away from public market scrutiny under its new ownership structure. For the millions of players who log into titles like Apex Legends and The Sims every day, the immediate impact of private ownership remains to be seen, though executive promises point toward heavy capital deployment and accelerated AI integration.

Yet the true test of the acquisition will unfold over the coming years as the consortium decides precisely how to wield its newfound leverage over the upper echelons of interactive entertainment. How executive leadership balances commercial expansion with the looming shadow of geopolitical scrutiny will define the publisher’s trajectory for years to come, making the studio’s next moves something to watch closely.
