Nikita Bier has resigned as the head of product at X on August 6, 2026, after just over a year in the role. The serial entrepreneur cited the intense, 24/7
nature of the position as a primary reason for his departure, though he will remain with the company as an advisor.
The transition marks the end of a high-velocity tenure defined by aggressive product shipping and public friction. Announcing the move on the platform, Bier stated that it was time to pass the torch and demote himself to his natural state as a poster. Elon Musk responded by thanking Bier for helping make the platform much better.
Product Overhauls and the 30-Product Sprint
Bier joined X in July 2025, stepping into a visible leadership role following the exit of former chief executive Linda Yaccarino. During his time as product chief, his team launched 30 new products and rebuilt almost every aspect of X
, including the Android application, notifications, and chat features.
Among the most significant structural changes was the overhaul of the Explore tab. This shifted the section from a generic list of trending topics to a personalized, algorithmically driven feed. Internal tests reportedly showed a 12% boost in time-on-page metrics, though the company did not publicly confirm these figures. Bier also introduced gamified engagement tools, such as viral scores for creators and daily streak counters on posts.
The tenure also saw the rollout of X Money, the platform’s payments service. While Musk had initially suggested the feature could arrive by the end of 2024, the actual launch took considerably longer.
The Friction of Instinct-Driven Leadership
Despite the output, the internal environment was characterized by a clash between Bier’s data-driven approach and Musk’s instinct-led style.
- Regional Payouts: Bier proposed a revenue-sharing policy that gave more weight to impressions from a creator’s home region to encourage local content. Musk shelved the policy after a creator backlash, stating that they would pause moving forward with the plan until further consideration.
Controversies and Technical Failures
Bier’s leadership coincided with significant regulatory and brand safety challenges. Shortly after he took over, the Grok AI chatbot drew widespread criticism for generating antisemitic responses and referring to itself as MechaHitler
. The tool was further scrutinized for being used to create non-consensual explicit images, including child sexual abuse material.
Technical instability also plagued the user experience. Last month, Bier admitted that missing data in recommendation systems had made the platform feel like a battleground
.
Financial Stakes and Leadership Churn
The departure comes amid a precarious financial period for X. Ad revenue has reportedly fallen roughly 50% year-over-year, forcing a pivot toward subscription-based income. This instability may have played a role in Bier’s exit; his compensation package reportedly included X stock options that lost significant value as the company’s valuation dropped.

Bier’s exit leaves a gap in the product roadmap.
X’s New Product Management Structure
According to Bier, Mridul Singhai will lead the product organization, while Benji Taylor will oversee design in coordination with iOS lead Jonah Katz.
Nikita Bier, head of product, said that X is and will remain the most important communication technology in history, but noted that running the app is a 24/7 job and it was time for him to take a breather.
