The league issued a three-game suspension and an undisclosed fine to relief pitcher Gabe Speier, while manager Dan Wilson received a one-game suspension and an undisclosed fine. Both personnel were also ejected during the contest.
Retaliation and the Eighth-Inning Confrontation
The sequence of events leading to the discipline began earlier in the game. The tension stemmed from the bottom of the seventh inning when a wild pitch from Detroit Tigers reliever Enmanuel De Jesús hit Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh in the stomach. In the eighth inning, Speier responded by intentionally throwing a fastball that struck Tigers infielder Gleyber Torres in the leg.
The plunking prompted Detroit manager A.J. Hinch to speak with the umpire, which quickly caused both teams’ benches and bullpens to empty onto the field. Although both bullpens and benches cleared, there was no physical altercation, punches, shoves, or seemingly even words exchanged as players stood around the diamond. Once umpires restored order, first-base umpire Mark Wenger ejected Speier. Mariners manager Dan Wilson quickly rushed out to dispute the ruling and was subsequently tossed from the game by the umpiring crew.

Speaking after the game, Gleyber Torres acknowledged the dynamics of the situation regarding the Mariners protecting their catcher. I guess they protected Raleigh,
Torres said. I don’t think we hit Raleigh on purpose. But that’s baseball. That’s their guy and I know they try to protect him.
While the Raleigh and Torres hit-by-pitches captured the bulk of the attention, the game featured a high volume of inside pitches. The two pitching staffs combined for five hit-by-pitches during the night, four of which impacted Detroit batters. Torres reaching base after being hit proved beneficial for Detroit, as Dillon Dingler followed with a home run off Mariners reliever Eduard Bazardo, narrowing Seattle’s lead to 3-2. However, the Mariners managed to secure insurance in the bottom of the eighth when Colt Emerson hit a solo home run. Closer Andrés Muñoz then shut the door with two strikeouts, preserving a 4-2 victory for Seattle.
Seattle, which was last above .500 in early July, has hoped to turn around a poor summer in order to live up to preseason expectations. Seattle is currently third in the American League West, trailing both the division-leading Houston Astros and the Texas Rangers by just a few games.

Dan Wilson served his one-game suspension on Thursday during the series finale at T-Mobile Park. Meanwhile, Gabe Speier chose to appeal his three-game suspension, allowing him to delay serving the penalty until the appeal process is officially resolved.
While Wilson immediately steps away from the dugout for the final game against Detroit, Speier remains available out of the bullpen until league officials review his case, leaving the reliever’s exact absence date dependent on the final ruling.
