Kommersant learned about disruptions in Twitch and Avito due to blocking VPN services

The blocking of VPN services, which Roskomnadzor began on September 3, affected the operation of FlashScore, the streaming service for broadcasting football tournaments, Kommersant reported, citing the service’s message on VKontakte. Users also complain about access to Avito, World of Tanks and World of WarShips, Twitch and BitTorrent.

World of WarShips developers published an appeal to users on September 6, stating that Internet providers have started blocking VPN services using DPI equipment. In the process, many UDP ports were affected, including those used in the game. In their opinion, the situation has affected both large providers and many local ones. “Closing UDP ports makes World of WarShips unable to enter the game and disconnect from the server during a crash,” the company said in a statement.

FlashScore informed the publication that the company is aware of the problems faced by users. The service is studying the technical infrastructure, but has not yet found the exact cause of the failure. Avito and Twitch did not respond to requests from the publication.

Roskomnadzor said that when VPN services were blocked, UDP ports were not blocked. However, sources of the publication in the four largest operators reported that they had tested their own networks and considered the operation of the equipment that Roskomnadzor installed on the networks within the framework of the law on “sovereign runet” as the reason for the difficulties. One of the interlocutors noted that a few days ago the operators contacted the Main Frequency Center of Roskomnadzor and asked to clarify the situation, but did not receive an answer.

VimpelCom officially replied that the equipment is working normally and no failures have been recorded recently, however, third-party technical means are installed on the network, which can potentially affect traffic transmission. Megafon, MTS and Tele2 declined to comment.
