New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate has issued notices to Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case. Both are required to appear for questioning before next Wednesday. Congress sources said that Sonia Gandhi will be present before Wednesday. The Congress accused the central government of fomenting political animosity. There is no evidence of a black money transaction. The Congress responded that there was nothing to hide.

The ED is investigating whether there was any money laundering in the acquisition of the liabilities and shares of Associated Journal Limited (AJL), the operator of the National Herald, by Young India Limited. Earlier, Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Pawan Bansal were questioned in connection with the case.

In 2012, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy filed a complaint against Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Motilal Vohra, Oscar Fernandes, Suman Dubey and Sam Pitroda. The newspaper was started by Jawaharlal Nehru in connection with the freedom struggle. The Congress-owned newspaper ceased operations in 2008.
