Roughly 20 businesses along Calgary’s Bowness Road lost running water Saturday morning after a water main break created a large sinkhole on the north side of the thoroughfare. City crews deployed acoustic equipment and brought in a water wagon as affected local shop owners faced unexpected closures during the busy summer weekend.
Water Main Break Triggers Sinkhole and Shuts Down Bowness Road Businesses
The incident left shop owners arriving for work to find flooded basements and major road damage.
Shauna Vowel, owner of Awaken the Gems, discovered several inches of water in her basement when she arrived on Saturday morning. We saw a giant sinkhole in the road that we have been told is caused by the recurring leak in the water main. I think this is the third water main break in this area in the last few weeks,
Vowel said.
With utilities cut off, many retail and service locations along the commercial strip had to lock their doors. Vowel noted that her shop was one of the few permitted to stay open, though losing weekend foot traffic dealt a severe blow to revenue.
Brewery Estimates Daily Losses as Community Faces Ongoing Infrastructure Troubles
The break occurred directly outside Brewsmith Brewing Co. at 6316 Bowness Road N.W. Miranda Mitchell, co-owner of the brewery, received an early morning call asking about running water before discovering the roadway had collapsed.
Because the building lacked water to operate dishwashers and restrooms, Brewsmith Brewing closed its doors for the entire weekend. Mitchell estimated the financial toll at $5,000 each day.

To mitigate the financial impact, the brewery introduced a 10 per cent discount labeled a sinkhole sale
for retail beer sales on Sunday.
This weekend disruption is part of a broader pattern of infrastructure challenges in the area. Bowness was among several communities placed under a boil-water advisory at the start of 2026 during repairs to the Bearspaw south feeder main.
City Response and Repair Timeline on Bowness Road
The City of Calgary posted an alert regarding the break just after 9:30 a.m. Saturday. City crews arrived at the scene with specialized acoustic equipment to assess the severity of the infrastructure failure and began working to stabilize the sinkhole, which spans the width of a single lane.
To support affected residents and businesses while infrastructure repairs are underway, the city deployed a temporary water wagon to the location. Municipal authorities continue to investigate the exact cause of the pipe failure.
Meanwhile, the broader municipal infrastructure update indicates that steel pipe installations across Bowness, Montgomery, and Parkdale remain on an expedited schedule aimed at resolving regional feeder main issues by the end of the year.
