Beyond the narrow path of totality, a partial eclipse will stretch across Western Europe, parts of Northwestern Africa, and a small portion of the United States. Nearly one in eight people worldwide—about 980 million in total—will be able to see the sun at least partly covered.
In northern and eastern Spain, prime viewing cities such as Leon, Valladolid, Zaragoza, Teruel, and Valencia sit directly inside the path of totality. Totality begins at roughly 18:27 GMT in western Spain, lasting for up to 110 seconds depending on the location. Major metropolitan hubs like Madrid and Barcelona fall just outside this band, but observers there will still experience more than 99 percent solar coverage.

While a total eclipse misses Ireland by only a couple of hundred kilometres, the island will experience a profound partial eclipse at sunset on Wednesday, August 12. Skywatchers in the north can expect 93 per cent coverage, while the extreme southwest could see up to 98 per cent coverage, according to irishtimes.com. Met Éireann chief forecaster Andrew Doran-Sherlock notes that the best viewing conditions are expected in the southeast—including Wicklow, Waterford, Kilkenny, and Carlow—alongside east Leinster, including Dublin, Meath, and Louth. However, the southwest faces a more uncertain forecast. The ideal spot may be the Blasket Islands, where a clear sea horizon will allow viewers to watch the sun become almost completely eclipsed just 15 per cent above the horizon.
As the eclipse deepens, ambient light levels will drop abruptly, plunging surrounds into a strange hue as human vision shifts from daylight colour perception to night monochrome vision. The darkening sky may cause street lights to switch on automatically and birds to roost early.
Scientific Airborne Missions and Public Viewing Events
Public enthusiasm has outstripped capacity at several educational sites. Dunsink Observatory sold out all tickets for its public viewing event in just four minutes, leaving a waiting list of 700 people. While the public gathers on the ground, the observatory’s director, Prof Peter Gallagher, will participate in a high-altitude scientific mission.
Researchers from the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, Trinity College Dublin, Technological University Dublin, and Italy’s National Institute for Astrophysics will fly an advanced solar telescope (E-CorMag) aboard an Irish Air Corps Airbus C295 aircraft. The team aims to study why the solar corona is intensely hot—a mystery that would otherwise require launching an expensive satellite.
“This kind of eclipse happens quite often on Earth, but at different places. However, it happens in a specific place only every 400 years,” Philippe Escoubet, Space Plasma Scientist at the European Space Agency, told Euronews. “So if you have an eclipse passing by your village or your city, it will not come back [for] 400 years, so it’s almost a lifetime event that you want to see.”

Eye Safety Warnings and Certified Protection Guidelines
Health experts emphasize that watching the celestial event safely requires rigorous precautions. Looking directly at the sun—even during an eclipse—can cause permanent photochemical injury to the retina known as solar retinopathy. Because the retina lacks pain receptors, damage occurs without immediate discomfort or warning signs.
