India Fresher Hiring Rises to 75% in Late 2026 Led by E-commerce and Retail

Fresher hiring intent across India rises to 75 per cent for the second half of 2026, led by e-commerce, retail, and manufacturing. According to new data released in August 2026, the job market recovery remains uneven, with traditional sectors like IT seeing a dip while specialized AI and technology roles surge.

As India’s economy expands through technology, artificial intelligence, and digital infrastructure, the landscape for entry-level recruitment is undergoing a structural shift. The question for young job seekers is no longer just whether opportunities exist, but which specific sectors are driving growth and what modern capabilities they demand.

Where Fresher Hiring Intent Stands in Late 2026

The overall outlook for young professionals entering the workforce shows measurable improvement. According to TeamLease EdTech’s Career Outlook Report for July-December 2026, 75 per cent of employers surveyed across India intend to hire freshers in the second half of the year. This marks an increase from the 73 per cent recorded in the previous six-month period. The findings are drawn from responses collected from 1,097 employers between May and July 2026.

However, this recovery is far from uniform. Consumer-facing businesses, digital commerce, and industrial manufacturing are outpacing traditional white-collar graduate recruitment. E-commerce and technology start-ups, alongside retail, lead the hiring intentions at 93 per cent each. Manufacturing follows closely at 89 per cent, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) record 86 per cent, and travel and hospitality stand at 81 per cent.

Growth is also visible across consecutive reporting periods. Hiring intent in e-commerce and technology start-ups increased from 90 per cent in the first half of 2026 to 93 per cent in the second half. Retail rose from 91 per cent to 93 per cent, and manufacturing grew from 85 per cent to 89 per cent. FMCG posted a six-percentage-point rise from 80 per cent to 86 per cent, while travel and hospitality climbed from 77 per cent to 81 per cent.

Shifting Fortunes in Traditional IT and Consulting Sectors

While consumer and industrial sectors accelerate hiring, segments historically tied to mass graduate recruitment are experiencing a cooling period. Information Technology, despite maintaining a relatively high hiring intent of 76 per cent, has dropped five percentage points from 81 per cent in the first half of 2026.

Other white-collar service segments show a similar downward adjustment in entry-level demand. Consulting fell from 22 per cent to 19 per cent, and educational services declined from 23 per cent to 21 per cent. Media and entertainment dropped from 54 per cent to 52 per cent, marketing and advertising moved from 62 per cent to 59 per cent, and telecom shifted from 64 per cent to 61 per cent.

This divergence underscores a broader transition away from qualification-led recruitment toward capability-led hiring. Employers are placing greater weight on digital fluency, practical experience, and the ability to apply specialized skills in workplace settings.

High-demand roles highlight the technical specialization shaping the modern job market. The report’s top five fresher roles consist of the AI Application Developer, Jr. Semiconductor Design Engineer, Data Centre Operations Associate, Programmatic Advertising Associate, and Inventory & Dispatch Executive.
