Reducing the risk of cancer death may be as straightforward as introducing brief activity breaks throughout the day, according to an observational study published in foxnews.com. Researchers from the University of Glasgow investigated the connection between cancer and prolonged sedentary behavior, finding that participants who regularly interrupted their sitting time experienced a lower risk of cancer mortality.
Study Links Brief Activity Breaks to Lower Cancer Mortality
The research team monitored 91,292 volunteer participants in the United Kingdom who wore movement-tracking devices on their wrists for a duration of seven days to document sedentary habits. Scientists tracked the health outcomes of these volunteers over a period of about 12 years, as reported by Euronews.
How Sitting Duration Affects Risk
The study defined prolonged sedentary behavior as any bout lasting at least 30 minutes where at least 90 percent of the time was spent sitting or reclining. Conversely, interrupted sitting was defined as sessions lasting fewer than 30 minutes or sessions broken up by short periods of physical movement.
According to the findings, each additional hour per day of prolonged sedentary behavior was associated with a 10 percent higher risk of cancer death. Sedentary behavior broadly encompasses any activity involving low energy expenditure while sitting, reclining, or lying down for at least 30 minutes. Authors of the study noted that sedentary behavior accounts for approximately 55 percent of waking time in both children and adults, based on self-reported data.
Replacing Sitting Time with Physical Activity
The study demonstrated that swapping sedentary time for various levels of physical activity can substantially alter cancer mortality risks:

- Light physical activity: Replacing one hour of sitting each day with light activity—such as washing dishes, ironing a shirt, or walking at a low speed—was associated with a 12 percent lower risk of cancer death.
- Moderate activity: Replacing 30 minutes of sitting with moderate exercise, such as brisk walking or mopping, was linked to an 8 percent lower risk.
- Vigorous activity: Replacing just five minutes of sitting with vigorous activity, like running or playing basketball, was associated with a 22 percent lower risk.
Our findings suggest that the health effects of sedentary behaviour may depend not only on total sedentary time, but also on whether that time is accumulated in prolonged bouts or interrupted by activity,
the study’s authors stated.
Broader Health Guidelines and Study Limitations
Researchers emphasized that light movement warrants attention alongside traditional exercise. Current health guidelines focus heavily on moderate or vigorous exercise, but our findings show that light movement shouldn't be ignored,
the authors wrote.

Despite the findings, the researchers urged caution in interpreting the data, noting that the study cannot prove causality. Additionally, the volunteers may not fully represent the wider population, and the activity monitors captured behavior over a limited timeframe without recording specific contexts such as television viewing, work, or driving.
At the 2018 World Health Assembly, participating countries agreed to a global target aiming for a 15 percent reduction in physical inactivity by 2030 compared to baseline levels from 2010. However, the World Health Organization has warned that nations remain off-track, projecting that global inactivity levels could rise further.
