HBO has secured one of its most recognizable stars yet for its sprawling adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s fantasy books. The first season of the adaptation, which covers Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is scheduled to premiere on December 25 across HBO and HBO Max.
Entering the Chamber of Secrets
While the first season introduces audiences to the wizarding world, Hoult’s character takes center stage in the second chapter of the franchise. Season 2 will adapt Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the book where Lockhart arrives at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. In the story, Lockhart is celebrated across the wizarding world for his documented heroic acts and numerous published books, though his charm quickly masks a distinct lack of actual qualifications for the post.
For Hoult, stepping into a major Warner Bros. property is familiar territory. The actor currently plays Lex Luthor in James Gunn’s DC Studios films, having originated the part in 2025’s Superman with a planned return in the sequel Man of Tomorrow scheduled for 2027. His extensive franchise history also includes playing Dr. Hank McCoy, or Beast, across multiple X-Men films, alongside roles in Mad Max: Fury Road,Nosferatu, and Juror #2.

Interestingly, this casting comes after years of near-misses with the wizarding franchise. In a previous interview, Hoult recalled auditioning for Chris Columbus during the casting process for the original films. He tried out for the title role of Harry Potter and was later asked to read for Draco Malfoy before eventually joking that he risked aging out of the universe entirely.
The casting announcement has sparked intense reactions across social media, highlighting the complicated feelings surrounding the franchise’s creative leadership. Fans who praised Hoult’s past work expressed disappointment over his involvement due to author J.K.
