Astronomy enthusiasts are preparing for one of the most anticipated and spectacular celestial events of the year as the Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak. The annual display runs actively from July 17 through August 24, with the highest level of activity anticipated during the night of August 12 and into the early morning of August 13 according to NDTV. When the tiny fragments left in its wake enter Earth’s atmosphere, friction with the air heats them until they burn up, creating bright flashes and fast-moving streaks of light across the sky.
Astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli identified the comet as the source of the Perseids in 1865, following the comet’s discovery in 1862 by Louis Swift and Horace Tuttle. Dr. Becky Smethurst of the Royal Astronomical Society has described the event as one of the best astronomical nights of the year. Along with the Geminids in December and the Quadrantids in January, the Perseids rank among the three most intense meteor showers annually.

The 2026 display is expected to be particularly visible because the peak activity coincides directly with a new moon phase. With virtually none of the moon’s illuminated side visible from Earth, the absence of moonlight will leave the night sky much darker than usual, making even faint meteors and bright fireballs easier to spot.

The shower’s peak also arrives shortly after a total solar eclipse visible from parts of Greenland, Iceland, and Spain, alongside a partial solar eclipse visible across portions of Europe and parts of North America, including areas in the United States and Canada.
