During recent joint combat exercises in Germany, a U.S. armored brigade was overrun and decimated by Ukrainian drone units, underscoring the vulnerability of traditional ground forces to modern unmanned aerial warfare.
Military exercises are designed to stress-test doctrine against formidable challenges. Yet, the outcome of a recent simulation in Europe exposed a glaring tactical mismatch that military analysts describe as a wake-up call for global superpowers. The confrontation pitted elite American heavy armor against battle-tested aerial units, revealing how conflict has fundamentally rewritten the rules of the battlefield.
Combined Resolve Exercises Reveal Heavy Armor Vulnerabilities
The clashes occurred during the Combined Resolve joint training exercises held in Germany across April and May, as part of regular military preparations conducted twice a year. The U.S. contingent deployed 3,500 troops from the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team of the 1st Cavalry Division—an elite formation with deep historical roots stretching from the Korean War’s Pyongyang recapture to Vietnam.
Tasked with spearheading an offensive using traditional ground combat doctrines, the American forces advanced with their primary frontline assets: M1A2 Abrams main battle tanks and M2 Bradley fighting vehicles, supported by helicopters, electronic warfare systems, and anti-drone equipment. Opposing them was the opposing force known as “Nemesis,” the 412th Unmanned Systems Regiment of the Ukrainian forces.

As the armored columns rolled forward, Ukrainian reconnaissance drones quickly spotted the movement. Attack drones dropped munitions while suicide drones swarmed the vehicles, neutralizing the convoy with devastating speed. The tactical dominance was so complete that armored units were destroyed faster than the simulation could manage.
A U.S. military official stated via Chosun that in order to keep the training exercise going, they had to quickly revive and redeploy tanks and armored vehicles that had been ruled destroyed.
Because live ammunition was not used, control personnel judged vehicles as destroyed when drones circled overhead or closed in near enough to warrant a kill designation. The rapid elimination rate forced controllers to use a “respawn” mechanic, repeatedly reviving knocked-out tanks and armored vehicles just to keep the training exercise moving forward.
The Combat Experience Gap in Modern Drone Warfare
The disparity in the simulation stems from Ukraine’s combat experience against Russian invasion forces. While the United States maintains a heavily funded military apparatus and has recognized the importance of unmanned systems since 2023 through various training programs, institutionalizing real-world proficiency remains a steep challenge.

A training participant noted via Chosun that Ukrainian soldiers are extremely skilled at repairing and arming drones during combat, whereas American soldiers lack this experience.
Video footage from the exercises showed Ukrainian operators executing rapid, methodical combat cycles from target detection to first-person view strikes right into the center of armored vehicles. Analysts suggest this level of frontline proficiency gives adversaries who observe or fight alongside these forces an ominous tactical advantage.
Military experts note that North Korean troops deployed to the Kursk region in late 2024 have also gained exposure to modern drone combat alongside Russian forces. Observers warn that this accumulated operational experience will translate into a significant future security threat on the Korean Peninsula.
Strategic Reckoning for the Pentagon’s Ground Doctrine
The exercise results highlight deep structural challenges for conventional military powers. Despite pouring billions of dollars into drone and counter-drone technologies, the U.S. military continues to struggle with protecting armored columns during transit.
Elliott Cohen of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) stated via Chosun that recent battlefield experience demonstrates how all types of drones are essential to modern warfare, emphasizing that while it is crucial for the U.S. military to master this technology, it has not done so thus far.
Similar patterns have emerged in the Middle East, where U.S. forces have faced difficulties countering regional drone attacks. Yet, there were signs of operational adaptation during the German exercises. Observers noted that over the course of the two-week drill, the U.S. units demonstrated measurable improvements in executing counter-drone operations, signaling that institutional learning is underway even if actual combat proficiency takes time to build.
