Patriots star cornerback Christian Gonzalez missed a joint practice and preseason opener due to being physically unavailable after a hard fall in practice, though head coach Mike Vrabel dismissed rumors of a contract holdout.
Cornerback Christian Gonzalez triggered immediate speculation across the league when he was nowhere to be found during the team’s joint practice with the Indianapolis Colts.
Mike Vrabel Shuts Down Contract Holdout Speculation
Because the cornerback is currently in the middle of negotiating a massive contract extension as he enters the fourth year of his rookie contract, observers immediately wondered if his absence was a financial protest. The All-Pro defender is likely ready to reset the cornerback market, and after being a limited participant during mandatory minicamp this past spring, Gonzalez had been a full participant in training camp prior to Tuesday.
Head coach Mike Vrabel stepped in swiftly to put those rumors to bed. Clarifying the situation following the preseason opener, Vrabel explained that his star player simply could not take the field.
“Christian was unavailable, physically unavailable, for the practice. That’s the clarification.”

Vrabel added: “Just like other players that I told to have treatment, and everybody has a plan here, there were other guys that were in that same category. If you want to list the names, Christian Elliss, Brenden Schooler, Harold Landry, Christian Barmore, et cetera. So, make sure they’re all included. They were all in the same group of what they did.”
The Hard Fall That Sparked the Training Camp Scare
The physical issue stems directly from a hard fall Gonzalez took while contending a jump ball against wide receiver Romeo Doubs in the end zone during the tail end of Monday’s training camp session. Although he appeared shaken up on the play, he did not appear to suffer a major injury.
Still, New England opted to play it safe with their prized defensive cornerstone. The caution is well-founded given the shadow of a hamstring injury that derailed his 2025 campaign.
Defensive Resilience and Preseason Outlook
Gonzalez was also among a group of players not in attendance for Thursday’s preseason opener, where the Patriots just kicked off their 2026 preseason slate, playing to a 13-13 tie against the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday night. Without Gonzalez and the majority of their starters on the field Thursday, the New England defense still held their own.

The unit forced four turnovers, which featured interceptions from Kindle Vildor and John Saunders Jr. Meanwhile, the Colts started quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr., who looked solid in his return to action by completing 11 of his 14 passes for 145 yards and adding 53 yards on the ground, capping off a drive with a 1-yard rushing touchdown. For the Patriots, backup quarterback Tommy DeVito tossed a 12-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Williams to help secure the tie.
As training camp rolls on, the coaching staff will monitor his status closely. New England will definitely want Gonzalez back to 100 percent soon as preparations continue.
