While standard terrestrial iron produced through early smelting processes contained little to no nickel, meteorites often carry a high proportion of nickel.

Every single one of the thirteen nickel-bearing objects was an ornate finger ring or a fragment of one. Many of these pieces functioned as signet rings featuring flat bezels designed for royal seals, and several combined the cosmic iron with gold, silver, or bronze.

Most of these artifacts emerged from luxurious funerary contexts in mainland locations such as Mycenae. In one striking discovery from a Minoan necropolis on Crete, an investigator found a ring still adorning the finger of a supposed high priest.
