British supercar manufacturer McLaren has unveiled the McL 6GT concept, marking the brand’s first vehicle equipped with a manual transmission since the iconic F1 debuted in 1992. The prototype previews an upcoming production model slated for a 2028 release with an expected price tag of $1.5 million.
Supercar enthusiasts who miss the tactile engagement of three-pedal driving have a reason to watch the horizon. The newly revealed McLaren concept car bridges more than three decades of engineering history, dusting off a mechanical configuration that the brand largely left behind after its legendary 1990s halo car defined modern performance.
Unveiling the McL 6GT Concept and Its Heritage Connection
The F1 established the modern supercar blueprint upon its arrival in 1992, anchoring its layout around a six-speed manual transmission. Yet that specific analog gearbox never appeared in any subsequent car built by the British marque, until the introduction of the McL 6GT concept. Rather than relying on computer assistance, the new prototype features a true manual setup that allows drivers to physically row through the gears.
The vehicle’s aesthetic draws direct inspiration from Bruce McLaren’s very first road car, the M6GT built in 1969. The concept features a low-slung stance, clean lines stretching from front to back, giant front headlights, and a low-profile rear wing. An early iteration of the company badge, affectionately known as the Speedy Kiwi
logo, is etched directly into the fuel cap.
Cabin Layout and Powertrain Details
Inside the cabin, the interior integrates fully into the bodywork rather than sitting on top of it. While a prominent gear shifter sits atop the center console alongside a Papaya Orange clutch pedal visible in interior photographs, the cockpit still incorporates contemporary amenities. Digital displays sit upfront, and the steering wheel, seats, and door cards are wrapped in Alcantara.
Powertrain specifics for the concept remain under wraps, though physical versions of the prototype are running. The shift pattern etched atop the large gear lever indicates that whatever engine ultimately powers the car will link to a six-speed transmission.
Monterey Car Week Debut and 2028 Production Timeline
The public debut for the McL 6GT concept is scheduled during Monterey Car Week. Company representatives have emphasized that the vehicle is strictly a concept at this stage, meaning exterior and interior details will likely evolve before the final production version sees daylight.
That final reveal is slated for 2028, at which point the production model is projected to carry a $1.5 million price tag.
