Puerto Rican boxer Prichard Colón has died at age 33, eleven years after sustaining severe brain damage during his October 2015 professional bout in Fairfax, Virginia. His death, confirmed by major boxing organizations, follows more than a decade of medical complications stemming from the fight.

The 2015 Bout and Its Tragic Aftermath
Before stepping into the ring against Terrell Williams in October 2015, Colón held an undefeated record of 16 straight wins, including 13 victories by knockout. During the contest, Colón repeatedly complained about punches to the back of his head. Williams was ultimately deducted a point for illegal blows, while Colón was docked two points for a low blow and knocked down in the ninth round.
The match ended in unusual circumstances when Colón’s cornermen removed his gloves after the 10th round, mistakenly believing the fight was over, which resulted in a disqualification loss. Shortly after, Colón collapsed in his changing room. Medical personnel rushed him to the hospital, where he was found to have suffered a brain bleed and a brain haemorrhage.
Following emergency surgery to reduce brain swelling and relieve pressure, Colón was placed in a coma for 221 days. He never fought again and spent the remainder of his life in a vegetative state, unable to walk or talk, and requiring round-the-clock care. I did everything possible to fulfil his wish, his dream of bringing him on vacation to Puerto Rico as he so desired, but it couldn’t be done. Thank you for so many years of love and prayers. In the wake of the incident, Colón’s parents filed a lawsuit seeking more than $50m (£37m) in damages against the ringside doctor and promoters connected with the bout. That legal action remains an unresolved matter.
