India beat Wales 3-1 in FIH World Cup opener behind Harmanpreet Singh brace

India opened their FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026 campaign with a 3-1 victory over Wales on Saturday at the Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen, powered by a brace of penalty-corner goals from captain Harmanpreet Singh.

India made a confident start to their Pool D campaign in Amstelveen, establishing early control over a resilient Welsh side. Playing in a newly introduced saffron jersey, the former champions leaned heavily on their penalty-corner execution to secure all three points in their opening match.

Early Control and Penalty-Corner Dominance

India’s dominance took root in the opening quarter. Hardik Singh and Shilanand Lakra combined to earn the match’s early penalty corner in the eighth minute. With Harmanpreet Singh initially off the field, reserve drag-flicker Sanjay stepped up to break the deadlock. Sanjay converted the opportunity with a powerful drag-flick that zipped through the legs of goalkeeper Toby Reynolds-Cotterill.

Just three minutes later, the Indian captain restored his presence on the pitch and doubled the advantage. Harmanpreet produced a quality drag-flick from a set-piece in the 11th minute, giving India a 2-0 cushion that dictated the tempo through the remainder of the first quarter. Wales struggled to counter the sustained pressure, managing only a brief second-quarter breakthrough when Pritchard found himself one-on-one with Indian goalkeeper Suraj Karkera, only for his shot to strike the near post.

Harmanpreet Extends the Lead

After a quiet second quarter that ended with India maintaining its two-goal advantage at half-time, the third stanza brought renewed attacking intent. Wales increased their defensive urgency but failed to crack a disciplined Indian backline. In the 43rd minute, India earned another penalty corner following a prolonged spell of possession.

Harmanpreet made no mistake with the set-piece, firing home his second goal of the evening from the left flank. The strike completed the captain’s brace and extended India’s lead to 3-0, effectively sealing the contest heading into the final 15 minutes.

Financial Disparity Behind the Matchup

Beyond the turf, the fixture underscored a stark contrast between two hockey ecosystems. While India arrived in the Netherlands following months of preparation in a fully funded national camp backed by government and sponsor support, Wales reached the tournament under entirely different financial realities. Hockey Wales operates on a £100,000 annual budget deficit, requiring players to contribute roughly £1,200 annually toward travel and equipment.

Months before taking the pitch in Amstelveen, the Welsh squad launched an online crowdfunding campaign with a target of £40,000 to cover preparation matches, performance support, and travel. When the tournament began, the team was still short of that goal, having raised £38,071 through individual campaigns run by players ranging from teenager Nicholas Morgan to veteran goalie Dan Kyriakides.

“Competing at a Hockey World Cup requires an enormous commitment from players, staff and the wider programme. As a squad, we are training more than ever before as we prepare for the demands of elite international competition. From additional training camps and preparation matches to performance support and travel, the costs involved in competing at this level are significant.”

Late Wales Breakthrough and Upcoming Fixtures

Wales avoided a shutout in the closing minutes of the match. In the 56th minute, following a chaotic goalmouth scramble where the referee dropped his whistle, a video referral allowed a goal by Sam Welsh to stand. The score reduced the deficit to 1-3 after Indian goalkeeper Mohith HS turned away a powerful penalty-corner drag-flick from Gareth Furlong earlier in the quarter.
