A massive new religious monument now dominates the skyline of a small agricultural settlement west of Warsaw. The structure stands in the village of Konotopie, a community with a population of fewer than 150 residents. While the village itself is tiny, the artwork erected within its borders claims a major architectural title.
The monument reaches a total height of 55.6 meters, earning recognition as the tallest statue of its kind in Europe. Construction engineers and architectural observers measured the structure in two distinct parts. The main figure of the Virgin Mary spans 40.6 meters, and it rests upon a 15-meter pedestal shaped like a royal crown.
Private Financing and Personal Devotion Behind the Monument
The enormous project did not rely on public funds, church donations, or state subsidies. Instead, the inauguration on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2026, marked the culmination of a private endeavor funded entirely by one of the country’s wealthiest couples.
Roman Karkosik, a 75-year-old investor who built a fortune through the automotive supply industry and major transactions on the Warsaw Stock Exchange, financed the construction alongside his wife, Grażyna. The couple lives in a small estate just a few kilometers away from Konotopie. According to financial estimates published by the Polish architectural platform Architektura Murator, the total cost to build the monumental statue reached 23 million euros.
The motivation for the massive expenditure stems from a personal health ordeal. The couple constructed the monument as a direct expression of gratitude to God after Roman Karkosik recovered from a serious illness.
Height Comparisons and National Precedents
The towering structure in Konotopie instantly enters international comparisons regarding monumental religious art. With its total height of 55.6 meters, it easily clears the dimensions of the world-famous Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which measures approximately 38 meters including its base. However, the Polish monument remains shorter than the massive 98-meter statue of the Virgin Mary located in the Philippines.
The Konotopie project is not Poland’s first giant religious landmark. Since 2010, an enormous statue of Jesus has stood in Świebodzine near the German border. Modelled similarly after the Rio de Janeiro landmark, that earlier structure reaches 36 meters including its crown, though it was financed through public donations rather than private wealth.
Local Hopes and Public Criticism Over the Sanctuary
The arrival of a European-record-holding monument in a hamlet of 150 people has created distinct community divisions. Residents in Konotopie harbor strong hopes that the towering structure will transform their rural district into a magnet for tourists and religious pilgrims, injecting economic life into the surrounding region.
At the same time, the project has drawn sharp theological and cultural criticism from commentators within the country.
Dominican priest Pawel Guzyński voiced strong objections to the memorial. Speaking to a broadcasting outlet, he compared the colossal artwork to an inappropriate religious symbol, calling the structure a King Kong in a field and characterizing the massive undertaking as a form of idolatry.
