Victoria Police are investigating an alleged sexual assault involving several Sydney Swans AFL players at an East Melbourne hotel in the early hours of August 17, 2026. The club and AFL confirmed the probe as chief executive Matthew Pavlich described the club as extremely shocked and disappointed.

The Sydney Swans had just secured second spot on the AFL ladder and a home qualifying final with a 36-point victory over Essendon at the MCG on Sunday evening. Instead of celebrating a successful campaign, the club woke to an unfolding police investigation at their Melbourne accommodation.

Police Investigation at the Pullman East Melbourne

Detectives launched an inquiry following a report of a sexual assault at the Pullman East Melbourne on Wellington Parade. The incident allegedly occurred in the early hours of Monday morning while the team stayed at the hotel after their Sunday night fixture.

Plain-clothes officers and uniform police arrived at the venue on Monday morning with clipboards and camera equipment. According to witness accounts, police went inside hotel rooms and left the venue with a number of items in evidence bags.

Players Named and Club Reaction

Reports surfaced linking key players to the police inquiries. Representatives were contacted regarding Isaac Heeney, Riley Bice, James Jordon, Chad Warner, and one other player after industry sources indicated they spoke with police. Reporting noted that not all five players were under direct investigation, but were assisting with enquiries. The group drove back to Sydney in a rental car on Monday evening.

Swans chief executive Matthew Pavlich addressed the media outside club headquarters at Moore Park on Monday afternoon. His remarks lasted less than one minute.

“We’re still piecing together exactly what’s transpired here and have our own set of internal inquiries ongoing. Safe to say, we’re extremely shocked and disappointed that this has taken place, and that the players have found themselves in this situation.”

Hotel Foyer Confrontation and Early Morning Witness Accounts

Tensions at the hotel mounted early in the morning when hotel staff were confronted. Witness accounts described two women approaching staff demanding entry to a guest room and complaining about an incident that took place during the night.

Swans coach Dean Cox was caught unawares when approached by a woman in the hotel foyer during the morning exchange. Witnesses noted that Cox was known to be rocked by the confrontation as photographs of the encounter emerged. The team had remained in Melbourne overnight because they did not fly home after Sunday’s match due to the Sydney Airport curfew, with reports indicating some players visited a local bar before returning to the hotel.

AFL Position and Imminent Finals Uncertainty

The league released a brief statement confirming the club made the AFL aware of the matter, which sits firmly under Victoria Police jurisdiction. The AFL integrity unit routinely defers to police investigations while monitoring developments internally.

The timing plunges Sydney’s campaign into severe uncertainty. The Swans are scheduled to play North Melbourne at the SCG in the final round before hosting a qualifying final. Club officials are considering potential sanctions for late-night drinking at the team hotel alongside the possibility of standing down the involved players, leaving their immediate playing futures under a heavy cloud.
