A support staff worker suffered life-threatening knife injuries during an incident at a Surrey hotel housing asylum seekers in Staines on Saturday evening. Armed police arrested a young Somali national on suspicion of attempted murder as a major emergency response unfolded near Heathrow Airport.
Emergency services rushed to the Stanwell Hotel on Town Lane in Staines at 6.30pm on Saturday following reports of a violent knife attack inside the premises. Surrey Police dispatched armed officers and medical crews to the scene, where they found a man in his thirties suffering from severe knife wounds. Paramedics transported the victim to a nearby hospital, where medical staff confirmed he remains in a serious, life-threatening condition.
Victim Identified as Support Worker by Local MP
Lincoln Jopp, the Conservative Member of Parliament for Spelthorne, posted a video on Facebook on Sunday confirming that the victim of the stabbing is a support staff worker employed at the facility. Mr Jopp stated that he received a direct phone call on Saturday from the chief constable of Surrey Police informing him of the attack.
One of the support staff who work here was stabbed,
Mr Jopp said in his video address, adding that one of the people who live here was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
Suspect Arrested and Police Investigation Underway
Firearms units deployed to the venue tackled and arrested a Somali national in his twenties on suspicion of attempted murder. Police confirmed that the suspect remains in custody and that officers are not seeking anyone else in connection with the attack.

“Due to the nature of the report, armed officers were dispatched to the scene and assisted with the arrest. There remains a police presence in the area while we carry out initial enquiries.”
Superintendent Kate Hyder, Surrey Police
Forensics teams locked down the venue, cordoning off access while detectives combed the area for evidence. Authorities urged members of the public to refrain from circulating unverified speculation online while initial inquiries continue.
“We understand this incident has caused concern within the local community, and I encourage you to speak to local officers.”

Background of the Town Lane Facility
The government first began using the hotel on Town Lane to house individuals and families seeking asylum in 2022. Plans to return the site to wider community use were revealed earlier this year, alongside a proposed £10 million refurbishment.

The redevelopment scheme would increase the property from 56 to 96 rooms, modernising the facilities for business and leisure guests, including travelers arriving from nearby Heathrow Airport. Under those proposals, asylum seekers staying at the hotel would be expected to move out if planning permission receives final approval from Spelthorne Borough Council.
Community Impact and Next Steps
Detectives continue to appeal for witnesses and anyone with relevant information to come forward immediately to aid the ongoing attempted murder investigation as officers maintain a visible presence in the surrounding area.
