The coaching change follows a turbulent period for the Lions of Teranga. Thiaw was heavily criticised for his side’s Round of 32 exit at the FIFA World Cup 2026, which was confirmed by a 3-2 defeat by Belgium, and was subsequently dismissed. His main mission will be to revitalise the team after Senegal’s bruising loss to Belgium in the last 32 of the World Cup. Thiaw was sacked less than two weeks later. The 45-year-old former Senegal international had taken over in 2024. Vieira’s coaching career began in Major League Soccer with New York City FC in 2016, before Nice brought him back to France in 2018. After a two-year stint in the English Premier League with Crystal Palace, Vieira had one-year spells with Strasbourg and Genoa. After ending his playing career at Manchester City, Vieira cut his coaching teeth at New York City FC from 2016 before taking over the French top-flight side Nice from 2018 to 2020. The 50-year-old returned to England as manager of Premier League side Crystal Palace in 2021 but was sacked in March 2023 after a 12-match winless run. He subsequently had short stints at Strasbourg and Italian side Genoa.

The Lions of Teranga are still hoping to regain their 2025 AFCON title by appealing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport against CAF’s ruling to award the title to Morocco, who were defeated in the final of the tournament, which extended into January of this year.
