Crystal Palace has signed 19-year-old U.S. youth international winger Zavier Gozo from Real Salt Lake on a five-year contract in a club-record deal reported at $15 million (£11m), marking a historic milestone as the first Utah native to arrive in England’s Premier League.

Gozo officially put pen to paper on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, joining a Palace squad that opens its league campaign under new head coach Pierre Sage on Saturday against Everton.

From West Valley City to the Premier League Stage

Gozo’s path to England bypassed conventional expectations. Growing up in Eagle Mountain, Utah, with a soccer-centric upbringing shaped by his father Alban and older brother Elijah, Gozo showcased elite physical abilities that allowed him to play against older competition. He joined the Real Salt Lake academy in 2021 as a 14-year-old, advancing rapidly through the Real Monarchs before making his Major League Soccer debut at just 16 years old in October 2023 against the LA Galaxy.

On the pitch, his production matched his upside. During the 2025 MLS campaign, Gozo earned a spot at No. 10 on the annual 22 Under 22 list selected by league experts, coaches, and sporting directors. He built on that breakout season by racking up six goals and five assists across 1,417 minutes of action, establishing himself as RSL’s goal-contribution leader before his departure.

His technical profile in close quarters and aggressive vertical movement stood out across Major League Soccer. Analysts noted that Gozo recorded 67 progressive carries upfield, placing him in rare company alongside marquee creators such as Lionel Messi and Denis Bouanga.

Overhauling the Real Salt Lake Academy Pipeline

When new ownership led by David Blitzer and Ryan Smith took over in 2021—before controlling interest shifted to Miller Sports & Entertainment—club leadership confronted an under-resourced academy operation.

Concerted reinvestment targeted dorms, coaching, scouting, and sports science. Gozo emerged as the literal standard-bearer for this new developmental class, sharing a birth year with the first wave of prospects cultivated under the renewed framework. RSL sporting director Kurt Schmid credited the player’s intrinsic drive for turning those structural changes into reality.

International Ambitions and World Cup Motivation

Despite zero senior international appearances, Gozo surged into the conversation as a late-breaking dark-horse candidate for the United States men’s national team’s 2026 World Cup squad. Though ultimately omitted by Mauricio Pochettino alongside teammate Diego Luna, the rejection served as a powerful motivator rather than a setback.

I thought I would be less disappointed than I was, Gozo admitted in an interview with The Guardian. Obviously, it wasn’t like I was supposed to go. I feel like I was disappointed, but I also think it just gave me so much more motivation to be able to make the first team, whenever that is.

By securing a move to the English Premier League ahead of the autumn international windows, Gozo positions himself directly in front of national team scouts. Training daily alongside USMNT center back Chris Richards—who also arrived in Europe via an MLS academy at Crystal Palace—will help keep him firmly in Pochettino’s cycle.

A Permanent Stamp on the Utah Record Books

Before leaving for London, Gozo reflected on his deep ties to the franchise and community that launched his career. He departs as the youngest All-Star in club history after earning selection to the 2026 MLS All-Star Game at 19 years, four months, and two days old.

“It’s difficult to put into words what this Club, the fans and this community mean to me. As a Homegrown kid from Utah, Real Salt Lake has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. This is home. This is where I grew up.”

In addition to the undisclosed upfront fee, Real Salt Lake retained a significant percentage of any future transfer fee, ensuring the club will continue to benefit financially should the teenage winger’s trajectory continue upward in English football.

What Lies Ahead at Selhurst Park

Gozo joins Crystal Palace’s summer influx alongside Oscar Mingueza, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Dwight McNeil, Evann Guessand, and Anan Khalaili. With international clearance pending, attention shifts immediately to whether the teenage attacker will feature in matchday squads under Pierre Sage as the Premier League campaign gets underway.
