Sandra Bullock has spoken publicly for the first time about the death of her longtime partner, Bryan Randall, revealing why his diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) was kept secret from the public. Randall passed away on August 5, 2023, at the age of 57, following a private three-year battle with the progressive neurodegenerative disease.
Sandra Bullock Breaks Silence on Bryan Randall’s Secret ALS Battle
Appearing on the Globalnews podcast, hosted by Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett, Bullock explained that Randall specifically asked her not to disclose his condition. He asked me not to share. I know why he asked me not to,
she said, according to Digitalspy. I wasn’t allowed to speak about it. That was the request and I tried – I honoured it.
The Emotional Toll of Secrecy and the COVID-19 Pandemic
Bullock and Randall began dating in 2015 after she hired him to photograph her son Louis’ fifth birthday party. They went on to co-parent Bullock’s children, Louis and Laila, alongside Randall’s daughter, Skylar.

According to Page Six, Randall was diagnosed with ALS in 2020, which coincided with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Bullock admitted that maintaining the secret while caring for Randall and raising two young children during global lockdowns created an intensely difficult environment. The entire world was locked in with a pandemic. It was literally like the final diagnosis, even though he was ill for half of our relationship,
she shared, noting that the combination of circumstances formed a trifecta that was pretty dark.
While her sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, was the only person who knew about the diagnosis for a while, Bullock eventually confided in close friends Jennifer Aniston and Amanda Anka, the wife of Jason Bateman. However, she acknowledged that the strict privacy request ultimately isolated me in the process.
Navigating Anticipatory Grief and Family Caregiving
Reflecting on the progression of the disease, Bullock described ALS as the process of elimination over the course of a year,
involving numerous medical milestones, breath tests, and grips. Despite having experience dealing with family illnesses—noting that her mother died from cancer—she found the hardest part was shielding her children, particularly her young daughter who viewed Randall as a father figure.

Bullock shared that she began processing her loss long before Randall’s physical passing. I started grieving Bryan four years before he passed,
she said. My person left a lot earlier than the body left. I don’t think I ever dealt with that until after he passed, because you’re just on this treadmill, you know?
Following Randall’s death, his family released a statement expressing gratitude to the doctors and nurses who aided in his care at home. Bullock’s sister, Gesine, also praised the Oscar-winning actor on Instagram, writing that Randall had the best of caretakers in my amazing sister and the band of nurses she assembled who helped her look after him in their home.
