Mark Carney suspends US trade talks as 50% tariffs trigger retaliation

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the suspension of trade negotiations with the United States after high-stakes talks broke down late Friday night, resulting in the implementation of steep new American import levies. Carney called the 50% duties a miscalculation and accused the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump of presenting an unacceptable agreement.

The sweeping import taxes took effect at midnight, impacting a wide array of goods. According to the U.S. trade representative’s office, the tariffs affect about $20 billion worth of U.S. imports from Canada, touching items ranging from hockey sticks and building materials to liquors and select clothing lines.

The breakdown followed nearly two weeks of intense negotiations that had appeared promising just days earlier. On Tuesday, Trump had briefly paused tariffs, declaring on social media that the two sides had reached a deal. Canadian minister Dominic LeBlanc met for several hours with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on Thursday, and negotiators remained at the U.S. trade representative’s office past 10:30 p.m. ET on Friday before talks ultimately collapsed.

Differing Accounts of the Breakdown

In a robust address to Canadians, Carney stated that last-minute changes proposed by the United States were unfair, uneconomic, and called into question the reliability of any deal. He asserted that the terms would have compromised Canadian sovereignty and restricted the country’s ability to forge trade partnerships with other nations.

U.S. officials offered a contrasting perspective on why the agreement fell apart. Jamieson Greer stated on Fox News that Canada declined to finalize the trade deal under the terms agreed earlier this week and maintained that new demands and walkbacks by Canadian officials upended the progress made during the week. Greer added that the United States had been prepared to reduce existing tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, and automobiles as part of the package, but confirmed that no new talks planned with the Canadians exist at this time.

Canada Plans Dollar-for-Dollar Retaliation

In response to the U.S. measures, Carney announced that Canada will retaliate against the United States, matching the tariffs dollar for dollar to protect our workers and businesses.

The targeted counter-measures are scheduled to take effect on September 8, 2026, according to Peopledaily. The focused response will concentrate on specific U.S. sectors:

  • Steel
  • Dairy
  • Appliances
  • Agricultural equipment
  • Pulp and paper
  • Electronics

Provincial leaders across Canada reacted swiftly to the collapse. Ontario Premier Doug Ford voiced support for Carney, stating that Trump cannot be trusted, while British Columbia Premier David Eby warned that U.S. restrictions on independent trade deals would reduce Canada to an economic equivalent of the 51st state. Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette warned that jobs would likely be lost, and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith urged both governments to return to the negotiating table.
