NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter has captured sharp before-and-after images of a fresh 60-foot crater on the moon, carved when a spent SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage plowed into the lunar surface at 5,400 mph on August 5 following a January 2025 launch.

The impact site, located near Einstein Crater, has provided scientists with a rare up-close look at how orbital debris interacts with the lunar surface. The spent rocket body had been wandering through space for more than a year and a half after launching a pair of private moon landers in 2025 as part of NASA’s commercialization push. That mission sent Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost lander and a spacecraft built by Japanese company ispace toward the moon, with Blue Ghost succeeding in its touchdown while its counterpart crashed.

Tracking the Trajectory and Spotting the Scar

Finding the impact site required global coordination between independent astronomers, hobbyists, and space agencies. Independent observers first identified the rocket’s trajectory using publicly available data. NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies, operated for the agency’s Planetary Defense program out of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, used the event to test and validate tools for predicting impacts. The center incrementally refined the trajectory before handing the estimated coordinates to South Korea’s space team.

South Korea’s Danuri spacecraft was first on the scene to beam back initial photos of the crash scene using its high-resolution LUTI camera, proving accurate to about 0.6 miles. The Danuri team then shared those coordinates with NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter team to guide follow-up imaging sequences.

Orbital Maneuvers and the Moon’s Butterfly Ejecta

To secure the sharpest views yet, flight controllers had to tilt the veteran orbiter—which has been circling the moon since 2009—so its cameras pointed toward the impact zone while zooming along at one mile per second. Because the orbiter completes a polar circuit every two hours as the moon rotates beneath it, engineers had to wait six days for the scene to rotate into view. Timing had to be exact; missing the window by even 10 seconds would have thrown the target off-center by 10 miles.

Images captured on August 11 and August 12 by the spacecraft’s Narrow-Angle Camera revealed a crater measuring about 60 feet across and less than 10 feet deep. Distinctive dark and bright streaks radiate outward like butterfly wings. The darker lines represent weathered surface dust and rocks excavated from roughly 1.5 feet down and altered by eons of solar wind, cosmic rays, and micrometeorite strikes. The brighter streaks near the rim consist of fresh material hurled from deeper underground.

Robinson noted that the final image in the sequence was acquired with a 68-degree slew angle, offering a perspective comparable to what an Artemis astronaut will see looking out an Orion spacecraft window toward the lunar horizon.
