Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day dominated the North American box office in its fourth weekend of release, collecting $39 million to maintain the top spot. The vehicle pushed its domestic cume to $855 million, outperforming newcomer Insidious: Out of the Further.

Peter Parker’s latest big-screen outing continues to rewrite record books as it charges toward all-time milestones. While a slew of fresh challengers entered the marketplace, none managed to knock the web-slinger from his perch during a bustling late-summer frame.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day Closes In on Domestic and Global Records

In its fourth weekend in theaters, Spider-Man: Brand New Day added $39 million from 4,006 theaters across the United States and Canada, according to studio estimates. That push brings its total domestic earnings to $854.9 million through Sunday. The Sony release has now surpassed 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home to become the No. 3 highest-grossing film ever at the domestic box office. The film also stands as Sony’s highest-grossing domestic film after setting the record for the top global release in the studio’s history.

Globally, the blockbuster has amassed $2.22 billion, becoming the No. 6 release of all time at the worldwide box office. This surpasses 2015’s Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens, which moves to seventh on the chart with $2.07 billion. The latest Spidey film is now just behind Titanic at No. 5 with $2.26 billion and Ne Zha 2 at No. 4 with $2.27 billion. Brand New Day is also primed to eventually overtake The Force Awakens as the biggest movie ever at the domestic box office and could even be the first to clear $1 billion in North America. Meanwhile, Brand New Day is the third-highest grossing movie in history in terms of worldwide grosses, behind just 2009’s Avatar ($2.9 billion) and Avengers: Endgame ($2.7 billion) and ahead of 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water ($2.3 billion).

Insidious: Out of the Further Leads Horror Slate Despite Softer Debut

Sony claimed the top two spots at the box office as Insidious: Out of the Further opened in second place with an opening weekend of $25.3 million domestic from 3,303 locations and $60 million worldwide. The sixth installment in the horror franchise that began with 2011’s original Insidious was produced by Screen Gems, Stage 6 Films, and Blumhouse Atomic Monster. Internationally, it made $35 million.

The opening lands below the $33 million domestic start generated by 2023’s predecessor, Insidious: The Red Door. However, with an $18 million production budget, it is the most expensive movie of the series. Reception for Out of the Further has been mixed-to-positive with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 57% critics and 70% audience, alongside a C+ on CinemaScore, matching the grade of The Red Door. Without major studio horror releases for the next four weeks, Out of the Further aims to extend its run with limited competition. With this opening, the Insidious franchise has now passed $800 million in combined lifetime grosses over six films.

The Odyssey and Mutiny Round Out a Diverse Marketplace

Universal’s The Odyssey is in third on the charts, adding $19.5 million in its sixth weekend in North American theaters where it continues to play in over 3,000 locations, bringing its domestic total to just under $539.1 million. Earlier in the week, The Odyssey became the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time, surpassing Deadpool & Wolverine. Furthermore, The Odyssey also became Christopher Nolan’s highest grossing movie ever, both domestically and internationally. For the year, The Odyssey is second only to Spider-Man.

Much lower down on box office charts were Lionsgate’s action-thriller Mutiny, starring Jason Statham, and Black Bear’s comedy Spa Weekend, led by Isla Fisher, Leslie Mann, Anna Faris and Michelle Buteau. The Jason Statham-led Mutiny hoped to give the superhero blockbuster a fight alongside Insidious: Out of the Further.

A Rebounding Summer Box Office Looks Ahead

The web is holding, and Hollywood’s challengers are struggling to break through. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has been heading into its fourth weekend at No. 1 at the North American box office, as part of one of the defining theatrical hits of the summer. Brand New Day has faced off against newcomers including Insidious: Out of the Further, a comedy, a horror franchise, a Jason Statham action movie, and a family pic.

Insidious: Out of the Further underscores a softer late-summer box office. The story follows a young mother who can bring spirits back with her into the real world, starring Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea, and Lin Shaye. As Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues its historic run, the film remains on pace to pass Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the highest grossing film of all time before inflation adjustment.
