SpaceX’s veteran Falcon 9 first-stage booster, designated B1067, has completed its 36th flight and landing after launching 29 Starlink satellites on 9 July 2026. Built originally for a ten-flight goal, the reusable booster now sits just three missions shy of matching the space shuttle Discovery lifetime record of 39 flights.

Five years and 36 days after lifting NASA’s CRS-22 cargo mission from Kennedy Space Center on 3 June 2021, booster B1067 took off once again from Cape Canaveral. The rocket carried 29 Starlink internet satellites into low-Earth orbit and touched down smoothly on the A Shortfall of Gravitas drone ship stationed in the Atlantic Ocean.

That landing wrapped up the stage’s 36th trip up and its 36th controlled return. The flight looked entirely routine—no experimental landing profile or special recovery ceremony accompanied the launch. The first stage separated normally, the upper stage continued toward orbit, and the booster landed at sea about eight and a half minutes after liftoff.

Cadence and Career Logbook Across Five Years

The elapsed time from B1067’s first launch to its 36th spans 1,861 days and almost 16 hours. When divided across the 35 intervals between missions, that yields an average turnaround of about 53.2 days per flight.

That steady cadence allowed the booster to build a remarkably diverse logbook before shifting heavily toward commercial broadband deployments. Its early assignments included launching Crew-3 and Crew-4, sending a total of eight astronauts toward the International Space Station across those two flights.

By its 36th flight, however, Starlink missions made up 25 of its total launches. This concentration helped explain how a booster acquires 36 flights in five years, flying back-to-back assignments with some months seeing two separate flights from the same vehicle.

Comparing Falcon 9 Reusability to Space Shuttle Discovery

Thirty-six flights put the Falcon 9 first stage within striking distance of space shuttle Discovery’s lifetime total of 39 missions, meaning B1067 has reached 92.3 per cent of that count in less than one-fifth of the time.

Discovery was an orbiter that carried humans, a large payload bay, life support, wings, landing gear, and thousands of thermal-protection tiles through orbital re-entry. The shuttle experienced prolonged orbital operations and the intense thermal environment of returning from orbit.

By contrast, B1067 is a single reusable first stage equipped with nine Merlin engines that provide opening thrust before separating well short of orbital speed. The stage experiences ascent loads, separation, salt-air recovery, and atmospheric return, but spends only minutes actively flying per mission. Comparing the two figures highlights hardware cadence rather than equivalent flight profiles, demonstrating how frequently modern booster hardware can complete turnaround processing.

From Ten-Flight Goals to the Next Reuse Thresholds

When the Falcon 9 Block 5 debuted in May 2018, SpaceX’s public ambition was built around a baseline goal: a first stage should manage at least ten flights without major refurbishment. That initial threshold was easily flattened into a shorthand limit, but engineers designed the vehicle for scheduled maintenance intervals and a much longer service life.

Having cleared 36 missions, B1067 now pushes closer to SpaceX’s most recently stated goal of qualifying its Falcon 9 first-stage vehicles to support 40 missions each. Given that this qualification target was outlined more than two years ago and seasoned boosters continue flying safely across dozens of missions, operations teams may look to push past the 40-flight mark as flight rates maintain their rapid pace.
