What began as a declaration of intent during the World Cup has curdled into open hostility at the Metropolitano, leaving the Argentina striker isolated from his teammates and unwelcome in the stands.
The friction boiled over during a 2-2 draw with Villarreal. When the match ended, Atlético players gathered near the centre circle, shook hands, and headed toward the south end of the stadium to acknowledge the supporters. Álvarez walked away from his teammates entirely, heading straight down the tunnel alone while the crowd unleashed a fresh round of jeers.
Fan Backlash and Club Defiance at the Metropolitano
The hostility toward the forward has been building since Álvarez declared it his dream to leave during international duty. Supporters whistled when his name was announced, jeered him during warm-ups, and targeted him directly after he entered the Villarreal match in the 66th minute. The club also reported Barcelona to the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). Atlético officials have insisted that the player’s €500m buyout clause is a factor and that they would not sell him to Barcelona.

While the Premier League champions are confident they can finance the transfer, the primary obstacle remains the player’s initial reluctance to move to London when his heart is set on Spain.
