Following months of trade speculation and a crowded wide receiver room, the New England Patriots traded wide receiver Kayshon Boutte to the Houston Texans on August 24, 2026. In return, New England acquired safety Jaylen Reed and a 2028 seventh-round draft pick.
The move solves a roster crunch for New England while giving Houston an immediate vertical threat following an injury to Jayden Higgins. Boutte, a 24-year-old receiver entering the final year of his rookie contract, joins a Texans squad looking for depth after Higgins suffered a season-ending torn ACL during training camp.
Roster Crunch in New England and Boutte’s Path to a Trade
Selected by the New England Patriots as a sixth-round pick in 2023 out of LSU, Boutte endured a quiet rookie season that saw him mostly serve as a healthy scratch. He rebounded over the next two seasons, developing into a reliable downfield target for quarterback Drake Maye. Over two seasons with Maye, Boutte caught 76 passes for 1,140 yards and nine touchdowns, also contributing during the team’s run to Super Bowl LX.
However, the Patriots overhauled their pass-catching corps during the offseason by acquiring A.J. Brown in a trade with the Eagles and signing former Packers wideout Romeo Doubs. With DeMario Douglas slated for slot duties, Mack Hollins and Kyle Williams providing depth, and competition from other young wideouts, Boutte was clearly expendable. According to MassLive’s Karen Guregian, Boutte had requested a trade from the team back in April.
Despite trade rumors hanging over his head throughout the offseason, coaches praised Boutte’s professional conduct during training camp. Patriots wide receivers coach Todd Downing commended his approach in mid-August.

So, I’ll keep our conversations private, but I will tell you this. He is an absolute joy to coach and I’m really glad he’s in the room.”

Houston’s Urgent Need and the Return Package
The Texans accelerated their search for wide receiver help after Jayden Higgins tore his ACL during training camp, ruling him out for the 2026 season. While Houston also signed veteran free agents Sterling Shepard and Zay Jones, Boutte will be expected to carve out a role alongside Nico Collins, Tank Dell, Jaylin Noel, and Xavier Hutchinson.
In exchange for Boutte, New England received safety Jaylen Reed and a 2028 seventh-round draft pick. He appeared in seven games with one start as a rookie, recording 14 tackles, a fumble recovery, and two playoff starts.

What the Trade Means for Both Franchises
For New England, adding Reed bolsters a safety depth chart that features Craig Woodson and Kevin Byard. Woodson missed practice due to injury on the day of the trade, and the Patriots gain a physical, high-motor defender who saw limited defensive snaps behind a crowded Houston secondary in 2025.
For Boutte, the trade offers a crucial opportunity in a contract year. Entering free agency in the spring, the 5-foot-11, 197-pound wideout shifts from a crowded New England receiver room to a Houston offense where he can immediately compete for snaps alongside C.J. Stroud.
