Launched in 2023, Ethiopia’s national digital identification rollout has gained traction over a three-year period, registering 49.1 million people by August 24, 2026, according to figures from the Ethiopia National ID Program (NIDP). The rapid expansion relies on 12,000 biometric registration kits deployed across the country. Officials report that 150 agencies are now integrated with the system, processing over 194 million digital Know Your Customer (eKYC) verifications. Nearly 50 million citizens have been registered overall, while more than 160 million identity verification services have been provided to enable millions of Ethiopians to access financial services, government institutions, and digital platforms more efficiently.
According to the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC), the digital ID process is moving quickly, and its impact is already being felt across the country as it is actively bringing millions of previously unbanked and marginalized individuals into the formal financial system. The broadcaster adds that the ID is accelerating banking and mobile money transfers and streamlining everyday business operations.
Faydaverse Launch and Digital Sovereignty
Recently, Ethiopia took a step further in its push towards strengthening and modernizing its identity infrastructure as the national ID authority was transformed into a commercial government-owned enterprise, Faydaverse. Its inauguration took place early this month with the mandate to support initiatives aimed at developing, operating, and scaling trusted digital public infrastructure. With the establishment of Faydaverse as an independent government development enterprise under Ethiopian Investment Holdings, the initiative enters a new phase with a stronger institutional framework and an expanded vision for the future.
Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh underscored that the launch of Faydaverse represents a defining milestone in Ethiopia’s digital transformation journey, opening a new chapter toward digital sovereignty, innovation, and shared prosperity. Highlighting the significance of the development on a social post, Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen said digital identity has become more than a technological advancement in the 21st century, noting that it is a vital national infrastructure comparable to roads, electricity, and telecommunications.

The EBC references Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed who has described Fayda as an important tool for the country’s development, with its contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) expected to reach seven percent by 2030, all while safeguarding data privacy and ensuring economic sovereignty.
