How Hallescher FC Stunned Schalke Before the Break
The underdog reward arrived shortly before halftime when Vin Kastull capitalized on a failed clearance by the Schalke defense, firing a decisive shot into the far corner to give the fourth-tier side a surprise lead.
Schalke struggled to find rhythm in the final third during the opening 45 minutes, looking vulnerable to set pieces and lacking the cutting edge required to break down a resilient home defense.
The Tactical Shift and Dzeko’s Decisive Intervention
Muslic turned to his bench, introducing Edin Dzeko and Robin Gosens to inject urgency into the attack. The substitution paid immediate dividends in the 62nd minute when Adil Aouchiche delivered a cross into the box. Halle defender Burim Halili slipped while attempting to clear, allowing Dejan Ljubicic to pounce and finish neatly into the left corner to level the score.
Dzeko then put Schalke ahead in the 81st minute by converting from the penalty spot. Yet Halle refused to surrender. Goalkeeper Loris Karius made a crucial late save to keep Schalke ahead, but the home side struck back in stoppage time when Niclas Stierlin drove home from a corner kick, forcing the match into extra time.

The extra 30 minutes belonged entirely to Schalke as Edin Dzeko scored twice and played a decisive role in orchestrating the remaining goals. Just three minutes into the first period of extra time, Dzeko delivered a precise cross that Moussa Sylla headed home to restore the lead at 3-2.
Dzeko remained involved as Schalke extended its advantage before the break in extra time, combining with Sylla to set up substitute Junior Adamu for a header. The Bosnian forward capped off his dominant outing in the 117th minute, completing the scoring from Robin Gosens’ pass to seal the 5-2 result.
With the cup scare behind them, Schalke turns its attention to league play. The club will kick off its Bundesliga campaign away against Augsburg on Sunday. Elsewhere in the opening round of the German Cup, fellow Bundesliga sides Hamburg and Cologne also advanced, with Hamburg defeating SC Verl 3-0 and Cologne overcoming a deficit to edge Wurzburger Kickers 2-1.
