While initial financial terms were reported by a source close to the team as an initial 60 million pounds with further add-ons, The Guardian reported the total package at up to £70m, comprising a £65m fee plus £5m in add-ons and a sell-on clause.

United’s pursuit of Baleba is not entirely new. The club made overtures to sign him last year following his breakthrough campaign, but talks stalled when Brighton maintained a valuation exceeding £100 million. With the Seagulls showing a willingness to negotiate at a reduced price this summer, United stepped up their interest a week ago.

The acquisition addresses urgent depth requirements following the departure of Casemiro and a potentially season-ending knee injury sustained by Manuel Ugarte while playing for Uruguay at the World Cup. Baleba becomes the third midfield addition of the transfer window, joining Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa.
