Samsung tested a prototype 7,000mAh battery for the unreleased Galaxy S27 Ultra that required dropping the S Pen, but ultimately backed away from the design. Leak reports indicate the flagship phone is now targeted for a 5,700mAh to 6,000mAh silicon-carbon cell ahead of its expected early next year debut.
When it comes to pushing mobile battery boundaries, Samsung has historically played it safe. The cautious approach traces back to the 2016 battery failure incident, a huge event that severely damaged the company’s reputation. Even after ten years, it’s easy to see why the company still isn’t trying to push battery boundaries like its competitors, leaving the manufacturer hesitant to match the aggressive capacity jumps seen among overseas competitors like Oppo, Xiaomi, and Vivo. Yet behind closed doors, engineers explored a radical pivot for the upcoming flagship lineup before pulling back to a more grounded engineering target.
The 7,000mAh Prototype and the Cost of the S Pen
Samsung reportedly tested S27 Ultra models without an S Pen and with a large 7,000mAh battery. The 7,000mAh cell was one of five battery configurations Samsung is said to have tried for the S27 Ultra.
That dramatic capacity increase came with a steep structural compromise. Getting that much capacity in reportedly meant dropping the S Pen and its silo to free up space — a significant departure for a line that has treated the stylus as a defining feature. There is no independent confirmation any such unit was built.
Dropping the stylus would alter an identity feature that has defined the Ultra lineup for years. However, Android Headlines separately reports the final unit keeps the S Pen silo, with the bigger battery landing somewhere in that 5,700–6,000mAh range.
Silicon-Carbon Anodes and the New Capacity Target
According to Kro, Samsung is reportedly aiming for a 5,700mAh or 6,000mAh battery in the Galaxy S27 Ultra. This step forward is enabled by silicon-carbon cell technology, which the brand used in its Fold 8 devices this year, packing more energy into the same space and letting Samsung chase a bigger number without a proportionally larger phone.
Since the Galaxy S20 Ultra, Samsung has stuck with a 5,000mAh battery in its flagship phones. Deploying the same chemistry in a traditional slab flagship allows the company to break past the stagnant ceiling that has anchored every Ultra model since 2020.
Engineers must carefully balance raw capacity against operational lifespan when utilizing these high-density anodes. As Korean leaker kro via Android Authority explained in an X post (@kro_roe): The downside of using a silicon-carbon anode is that its battery lifespan can be lower than that of a conventional lithium-ion battery, so they’re currently trying to find the optimal balance between battery capacity and longevity.
A Revamped Design and Competitive Pressure
Perhaps the most interesting news about the Galaxy S27 Ultra is its revamped design. Naturally, Samsung has not confirmed anything yet, but this comes from a pretty reliable source. It ditches the camera setup that we have grown used to and swaps it out for something familiar. It’s not a Samsung thing, but it looks closer to the design that its competitor is using.

The push for larger power cells arrives as overseas competitors aggressively scale up specifications. You wouldn’t really blink an eye in the US market, but overseas competitors like Oppo, Xiaomi, and Vivo are pushing the upper limits. We’re seeing batteries hitting 7,300mAh and charging speeds that reach up to 240W. Sure, you can go with some lesser-known brands, and those phones will pack 33,000mAh batteries, but it’s not something you’re going to carry around with you all day.
Our Samsung S26 Ultra review noted the battery was unchanged at 5,000mAh and still not silicon-carbon — one of the few gaps in an otherwise complete flagship, at AED 5,099 at launch. A 700–1,000mAh bump on the S27 Ultra would close that gap and mark the biggest capacity increase the line has seen in years.
Expected Launch Timeline and Final Specifications
Samsung typically announces its Galaxy S series devices in January. Samsung’s next Galaxy S flagships are expected in the first quarter of next year, likely January or February, alongside the Galaxy S27, S27+ and S27 Pro, with the Exynos 2700 chip said to power some of them already making the rounds.
While official confirmation remains pending, current engineering benchmarks suggest the retail release will retain its productivity stylus while utilizing the refined silicon-carbon battery configuration to deliver the most significant generational capacity increase the Ultra line has experienced in years.
