Covid, Italy first in Europe for deaths in 7 days

by time news

Covid infections and deaths continue to drop globally. In the week from 23 to 29 May, over 3.3 million new cases reported (-11% compared to the previous 7 days) and 9,600 deaths (-3%), for a total of over 526 million confirmed cases and more 6 million deaths registered on the planet since the beginning of the pandemic. This is what emerges from the latest weekly report of the World Health Organization, which indicates Italy third globally and first in Europe for new deaths, and third in the European area for new infections.

In the analyzed period – the report specifies – the number of new weekly cases increased in two WHO regions (Americas, + 9%; Eastern Mediterranean, + 1%), while the other 4 reported a decrease. The western Pacific (+ 18%), the African region (+ 15%) and the Americas (+ 13%) recorded an increase in deaths, with the other 3 regions showing decreasing trends.

Once again the WHO warns that “these trends should be interpreted with caution, since several countries have progressively changed their testing strategies, with a consequent reduction in the overall number of swabs performed and therefore in the cases detected”.
