South Africa welcomed 991,696 overnight tourists in July 2026, marking a 12.5% year-on-year increase from 881,393 a year earlier, according to Statistics South Africa. International tourist arrivals for the first seven months of 2026 reached 6,576,169, up 12.4% from the same period in 2025.

African Visitors Drive the July Surge While Overseas Markets Diverge

The country recorded 991,696 overnight tourists during the month, an increase of 12.5% from 881,393 a year earlier, according to Statistics South Africa. Total international tourist arrivals for the first seven months of 2026 reached 6,576,169, representing a 12.4% increase from the same period in 2025. Regional travellers from neighbouring African nations fuelled the bulk of this expansion, while overseas arrivals experienced a more modest rise, with arrivals from African markets increasing by 14.3% year on year between January and July, while overseas arrivals grew by 5.7%.

Countries in the Southern African Development Community supplied 785,469 tourists in July. That represented approximately 79% of South Africa’s total overnight visitors for the month. SADC arrivals increased 14.9% from a year earlier. Calculations based on the official figures indicate that the region generated approximately 92% of South Africa’s net annual increase in tourists during July. Another 11,751 tourists came from African countries outside SADC, while overseas markets provided 193,637 visitors.

Europe remained the largest overseas source region, with 97,461 tourists. North America supplied 41,037. France, the Netherlands, Germany, Brazil, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates recorded increases. The United States declined slightly, while the United Kingdom also recorded a small fall. Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille said the figures showed that growth was becoming more geographically diversified.

The data reveals that the growth is becoming geographically diversified, which has been one of our strategic priorities.

Together with the private sector and stakeholders we’ll continue to build on this momentum through the recently launched digital visa, the Electronic Travel Authorisation system, says Minister de Lille.

Sharp Declines Hit Key Asian Feeder Markets

While regional and European numbers trended upward, the picture in Asia told a starkly different story. Total arrivals from Asia, China in particular, dropped by 10.3% year-on-year to just 15,827. The contrast shows that South Africa’s tourism growth is being driven largely by visitors from neighbouring African countries rather than the two Asian markets the government has identified as important sources of future growth.

Indian arrivals fell 26.9% to 3,808, dropping from 5,209 in July 2025 to 3,808 in July 2026. The number of Chinese tourists declined 20% to 2,669, declining from 3,335 during the same period. The weakness in China and India extends beyond a single month. Indian arrivals fell 30.8% during the first seven months of 2026, dropping to 29,525, while Chinese arrivals declined 23.8%, falling to 18,031. Total Asia year-to-date arrivals dropped 11.7%.

Visa Reforms and New Border Rules Face Implementation Hurdles

The number of foreign arrivals at South Africa’s ports rose 17.3% month on month to more than 1.27-million in July, a 6% increase over the same period last year. Stats SA said on Wednesday that most tourists, 97.5%, were in the country on holiday versus 1.9% who came for business, 0.6% for study and less than 0.1% for medical treatment during the month. Tourists from the Southern African Development Community constituted 79.2% of all tourists in July, with Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Lesotho leading the pack, while other African countries accounted for 1.2%, with Kenya, Ghana and Nigeria contributing the bulk.

Avoid Problems at South African Immigration 🇿🇦 5 Rules Tourists Must Know

This reaffirms earlier data suggesting that anti-immigrant sentiment largely directed at undocumented African nationals, which culminated in protests in late June with some countries repatriating their citizens, has not significantly deterred visits to South Africa. Wednesday’s report shows overseas visitors constituted 19.5% of all tourists in July, with the US, UK and the Netherlands collectively contributing 41% to this segment. Most African tourists, 97.3%, came to South Africa for a holiday during the month. For overseas regions, Australasia had the highest proportion of tourists who came for holidays, followed by the Middle East, North America, Central and South America, Europe and Asia.

More than 91% of overseas tourists arrived in the country by air, while 8.6% came by road and less than 1% by sea. Sadc visitors came predominantly by road, with just 6.5% arriving by air. Most tourists who arrived by road came through the Lebombo port in Mpumalanga, followed by Beitbridge on the border with Zimbabwe.

Economic Stakes and Strategic Infrastructure Priorities

President Cyril Ramaphosa recently identified tourism as one of four sectors targeted to drive inclusive economic growth, job creation and build confidence under Phase Three of the Government-Business Partnership and Operation Vulindlela. In 2024, tourism sustained 954,000 direct jobs and contributed 4.9% to GDP.
