Intelligence reports indicate that pro-Iranian Iraqi factions are planning imminent attacks against Saudi Arabia, as regional tensions persist following previous drone interceptions and counter-strikes by Saudi and US forces, according to media reports surfacing on Friday.
Intelligence gathering has flagged a potential security threat directed at the kingdom, with leaked assessments pointing to plans by armed groups operating from neighboring territory to carry out operations within the next several hours. The warnings underscore growing anxieties over the expansion of regional friction involving Iran-aligned militias and allied states.
Intelligence Warnings and Regional Security Coordination
The disclosures arrive as fresh intelligence points toward potential strikes, prompting diplomatic and security movements. Parallel to the intelligence leaks, a high-ranking Saudi security and military delegation arrived in Baghdad on Thursday to discuss enhancing border enforcement, intensifying the exchange of intelligence, and reinforcing bilateral security coordination between the two countries. Iraq’s Security Media Cell noted that the meeting included prominent security and intelligence officials from both sides, coming as a continuation of previous talks held in Riyadh. Baghdad had previously affirmed the readiness of its forces to thwart any attempt targeting neighboring countries, stressing that Iraqi territory would not be permitted to serve as a launching pad or transit route for any attacks against countries in the region.
The current state of alert follows a series of cross-border drone incidents earlier in the summer. On July 27, the Official Spokesperson for the Saudi Ministry of Defense, Staff Maj. Gen. Turki Al-Maliki, stated that air defense systems intercepted and destroyed a number of drones that attempted to target petroleum facilities in the Eastern Province and the Riyadh region.

Elaborating on the kingdom’s defensive posture, Al-Maliki emphasized the kingdom’s inherent right to defend itself and its assets, while maintaining its right to respond at the appropriate time and place, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA). On July 28, Al-Maliki announced that Saudi air defenses again intercepted and destroyed drones that attempted to target petroleum facilities in the Eastern Province, repeating that these terrorist attempts launched from Iraqi soil and were carried out by terrorist militias affiliated with Iran. He further reiterated the kingdom’s right to reserve the right to respond in the appropriate time and place.
On July 29, Al-Maliki reported that the Saudi Armed Forces, in coordination with the US Central Command, executed specific, targeted qualitative strikes against objectives belonging to those militias present on Iraqi soil that were linked to the attacks on petroleum facilities in the kingdom. Al-Maliki added that Saudi Arabia does not seek escalation, but will respond to any aggression it faces.
