At least 675 people died in Nepal and China after a glacial collapse triggered flash floods on August 26, 2026, with over 2,400 missing and rescue efforts hampered by unstable terrain and secondary flood risks, according to verified reports.

A Tsunami of Ice and Mud
The disaster struck around 2:30 p.m. on August 26 when a massive ice and debris flow, described as a tsunami-like wall of water and debris,
surged through the Lhende Khola river system, engulfing settlements in Nepal’s Rasuwa district and Tibet’s Gyirong County.

Survivors described scenes of devastation. Prayash Adhikari, a climate justice activist in Nepal, called the flood “devastating,” noting that “whole villages” were wiped out. International Aid and Shifting Death Toll
Canada announced CAN$5 million in humanitarian aid on August 28, with Randeep Sarai, Canada’s secretary of state for international development, stating the funding would support emergency relief efforts in Nepal.
The U.S. pledged $3.6 million, including emergency food assistance, as reported by the State Department. Meanwhile, Nepal’s Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle estimated reconstruction costs could reach between $4 billion and $5 billion.
The death toll has fluctuated across reports. The discrepancy reflects challenges in verifying casualties amid ongoing rescue operations. Nepal’s disaster management authority added 933 hydropower workers to the missing list, bringing the total missing to 2,426, including 517 foreigners.
Among the missing were 142 Indians, 34 Australians, and 517 foreign nationals, according to Nepal’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism. In Tibet, Chinese state media reported seven deaths and 554 missing, while Nepali officials estimated 558 people unaccounted for in Gyirong County.
Survivors and the Search for the Missing

The floods have strained resources across the region. In India, officials recovered seven bodies from rivers linked to the disaster, while the Nepal Tourism Board reported 261 foreign nationals rescued.
