U.S. Sen. Ed Markey secured the Massachusetts Democratic Party’s endorsement with 74% of delegate votes, defeating Rep. Seth Moulton in a primary race marked by clashes over AI regulation, transgender athlete policies, and generational leadership.
Debate on AI and Transgender Athletes
In their final debate before the September 1 primary, Markey and Moulton clashed over artificial intelligence and transgender athlete participation in sports. Markey, 80, faced criticism for admitting he use[s] whatever is inside of my iPhone or iPad, and I don’t know what companies my iPad might be using,
a statement Moulton, 47, seized on to argue for younger leadership to regulate emerging technologies.
Markey defended his stance by comparing AI oversight to automotive safety features: An automobile, regardless of the make, needs seatbelts, needs airbags, needs brakes.
Doesn’t make any difference what the make of the car is,
he said. The exchange underscored Moulton’s broader campaign theme of advocating for a new generation of leaders to regulate these technologies,
a message resonating with younger voters, though he trails Markey in polls.
The candidates also debated transgender athlete policies. Moulton, who previously stated he wouldn’t want my daughters getting run over on a playing field by a male or formerly male athlete,
apologized for the remarks but argued for a discussion about where we have to have issues of safety and fairness.
Markey rejected this approach, stating, They’re entitled to constitutional protections,
and accused Moulton of throwing those kids under the political bus
after the 2024 election, as reported by WCVB.
Endorsement and Primary Outlook
Markey’s dominance in the race was further cemented when he secured 74% of delegate votes at the Massachusetts Democratic Party convention on May 30, defeating Moulton in a contest framed as a battle between generational change
and “experience,” per Newbedfordguide. Moulton, a Marine veteran, campaigned on his credentials, but Markey’s endorsements from progressive figures like Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez bolstered his position.
Polls reinforce Markey’s advantage. An Emerson College survey released this week showed him at 37% to Moulton’s 32.3%, with a significant share of voters still undecided. A UMass poll from August 17 found four in five likely Democratic primary voters cited experience and trust
as reasons for backing Markey. Despite Moulton’s efforts to reframe the race as a choice between “stagnation” and “fresh ideas,” Markey’s long-standing presence in Congress and his role in shaping climate policy, including the Green New Deal, remain central to his appeal.
Moulton’s campaign has faced challenges in translating his rhetoric into momentum. While he highlighted his physics background and support for nuclear power as solutions to rising utility costs, Markey emphasized his record on healthcare, including his progressive bona fides.
The September 1 primary will determine the Democratic nominee, with Markey widely expected to win and face little resistance in the general election. However, Moulton’s focus on AI regulation and generational change has resonated with younger voters, who make up a growing share of the electorate.
