Philadelphia police are investigating a second armed robbery in Center City involving a masked suspect carrying an AR-15-style rifle. The early Friday morning holdup on Sansom Street follows a nearly identical armed robbery on Locust Street, with investigators examining potential connections between the two violent incidents.
Investigators are treating two armed robberies as connected, alarmed by the heavy weaponry displayed by suspects who have targeted victims in the early morning hours over the span of less than a week.
The Sansom Street Holdup
The latest confrontation unfolded at approximately 2:15 a.m. on August 28 along the 1500 block of Sansom Street. A 23-year-old man and two companions were returning home when a light gray or beige four-door sedan with tinted windows pulled up, according to police reports.
Two masked men jumped out of the vehicle. One of the suspects brandished an AR-15 style rifle, while his accomplice carried a black semi-automatic handgun. The assailants ripped two gold chains from one victim’s neck and demanded his silver diamond watch before fleeing westbound on Sansom Street. No injuries were reported during the early morning encounter.
Parallels to the Locust Street Robbery
The Sansom Street incident mirrors a brutal robbery that occurred just days earlier, just one block south on the 1500 block of Locust Street. Around 3 a.m. on Sunday, August 23, three people were approached by three masked men who emerged from a dark gray Honda Accord.
In that initial attack, the suspects ordered two of the victims to the ground. When a third victim did not comply, at least one robber pistol-whipped the individual in the face. The group looted cellphones, watches, car keys, wallets, driver’s licenses, and cash from the victims before escaping.
Stolen Vehicles and Viral Evidence
Law enforcement determined that the gray Honda Accord used in the Locust Street robbery had been stolen from Cheltenham Township on August 19. Investigators noted the vehicle spent roughly three hours parked in the area before the Sunday morning robberies began. Police later recovered the abandoned car in Philadelphia and moved to secure a search warrant.
Adding a public dimension to the case, part of the Locust Street robbery was captured on camera by a witness and circulated widely on social media. Police confirmed that the viral video showing a victim kneeling on the sidewalk while a gunman points a military-style weapon directly at his head forms an active piece of the evidentiary file.

It’s definitely unsettling to hear, considering we walk around this area all the time, and specifically the AR-15 part is frightening,
local resident Emma Hoover told reporters.
