Twenty years after the International Astronomical Union relegated Pluto to dwarf planet status during an August 2006 vote, the demotion remains deeply controversial. Scientists, the public, and even political figures continue to debate the definition of a planet, highlighting a lasting split between planetary scientists and astronomical dynamicists.
When the International Astronomical Union met on August 24, 2006, the resulting vote dropped our solar system from nine planets down to eight. Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet alongside four other confirmed dwarf bodies in the outer solar system. Two decades later, the decision continues to polarize researchers and capture public imagination alike.
The 2006 Vote and the Three-Point Definition That Sparked a Revolt
The catalyst for the demotion was the discovery of Eris, a distant celestial body located in the Kuiper Belt beyond Neptune. Because Eris possessed roughly the same size as Pluto—featuring less volume but greater mass—astronomers faced a pivotal choice. If Pluto remained a major planet, Eris demanded the same classification. At the same time, researchers were uncovering other distant objects like Haumea, Makemake, and Sedna, raising the prospect of a planetary roster numbering in the hundreds.
Seeking a manageable standard, the International Astronomical Union established a three-point planetary definition. A celestial body must orbit the Sun, possess sufficient mass to pull itself into a round shape, and have cleared its neighbourhood
gravitationally. Because Pluto shared its distant zone with other icy bodies, it failed the final criterion.
“I’m embarrassed for astronomy,” said Alan Stern, leader of NASA’s New Horizon’s mission to Pluto and a scientist at the Southwest Research Institute. “Less than 5 percent of the world’s astronomers voted.”

Critics argued that the criteria were fundamentally flawed. Researchers pointed out that Earth, Mars, Jupiter, and Neptune also share their orbital paths with asteroids. Furthermore, if the Earth were moved out to Pluto’s distant orbit, it would likewise fail to clear its zone under the official criteria.
Diverging Scientific Camps and the Rise of the Pluto Resistance
The demotion created two distinct factions within the scientific community. The geophysical camp champions the physical properties of a celestial body as the true measure of planethood, while dynamicists focus on an object’s location, surroundings, and trajectory. Many planetary scientists simply disregard the official International Astronomical Union standard altogether.
Philip Metzger, director of the Stephen W Hawking Centre for Microgravity Research and Education at the University of Central Florida, has been an outspoken critic of the ruling. The definition of a planet they created, you can’t use it at all,
Metzger noted, adding that it makes the definition of a planet completely non-useful in science.

While researchers debate technical criteria, the public has rallied around the distant celestial body. Writer, actor, and amateur astronomer Laurel Kornfeld has advocated for Pluto’s reinstatement since the day of the vote, participating in campaigns under banners like Pluto Resistance, 20 years: 2006-2026.
Historians observe that public affection stems partly from underdog symbolism. According to Kevin Schindler, a historian at the Lowell Observatory in Arizona where Pluto was discovered in 1930, Pluto represents the underdog that so many people root for, the small kid on the block that is being picked on.
Political Momentum and What Lies Ahead for the Outer Solar System
While advocacy remains largely concentrated in the United States—where national pride plays a role, given that Pluto was discovered there—the debate has recently entered political circles. During a congressional hearing in April, NASA administrator Jared Isaacman expressed support for a policy reversal, stating that he favored plans to Make Pluto a Planet Again.
Whether official definitions will ever change remains uncertain, as astronomical organizations and planetary scientists remain divided over orbital dynamics versus intrinsic physical properties. For now, Pluto retains its crown as the king of the dwarf planets, while researchers and advocates continue a twenty-year campaign to restore its former title.
