British student activist Finn Joughin was seized by Israeli settlers, detained in a West Bank outpost, and ordered deported following a confrontation in Umm Al-Kheir on Saturday.
Detention in Umm Al-Kheir and the Confrontation at the Fence
The confrontation unfolded on Saturday in the southern West Bank village of Umm Al-Kheir in Masafer Yatta, near Hebron, a town that has been recently surrounded by settlers. According to other activists who witnessed what happened, Palestinian children were playing football when children from settler families started intervening. They then ran to a house and started to dismantle a fence.
Footage posted online by both settlers and activists and seen by the BBC appears to show 22-year-old London-based student activist Finn Joughin standing by the fence and trying to protect it using his body as a child pushes against him. Joughin had been taking part in a protective presence initiative and was trying to protect Palestinian property when armed occupiers assaulted and detained him, according to lawyer Inbar Shaked Vardi.
Settlers removed Joughin forcefully, took him to an outpost, and locked him in a shed for about a half hour before turning him over to police, his lawyer said. Activists who were with Joughin at the time noted he was grabbed and dragged away without provocation or resistance.
Police Investigation and Family Response
Israeli police said a foreign national was detained by security personnel of a settler community who suspected him of an indecent act against a minor. In a later statement on Sunday, they said: The suspect was transferred to the police for questioning, which included, among other things, taking statements that raised suspicion of an assault against a minor.
Following his questioning, the suspect was taken into custody, and the investigation into the incident remains ongoing. Israeli police initially sought to extend his detention Sunday but later withdrew the request and ordered his immediate deportation, according to Haaretz. Joughin’s family told the BBC he was due to be deported from Israel on Monday, with his lawyer stating he was set to be deported from Israel Sunday without a hearing.
Vardi strongly denied the allegation, saying footage circulated online showed her client trying to protect the village during the confrontation. Despite clear documentation of the assault, Israel police chose to arrest the activist,
she said, adding that, to her knowledge, the attackers were not questioned. Fellow activists who were with Joughin at the time also denied there was any inappropriate behaviour.
In every single instance, it was the settler kids who approached Finn,
fellow activist Matthew, who declined to give his surname, told the BBC.
Diplomatic Escalation and Regional Violence
The UK Foreign Office says it has raised the detention of a British national in the occupied West Bank with Israeli authorities. The Foreign Office confirmed to the BBC that it was aware of the incident, and a spokesperson stated that officials from the British embassy in Tel Aviv have raised the case with the Israeli authorities and are seeking further information.
The episode occurred amid a broader surge in attacks by settlers on Palestinians and their property in the West Bank since the start of the Gaza war, which was triggered by the Hamas-led attack on Israel on 7 October 2023. All settlements are illegal under international law. Outposts are also illegal under Israeli law, although they are often supported by state services and funding. The occupied West Bank has also seen a dramatic surge in Israeli military activity, accompanied by the expansion of illegal Israeli settlement outposts throughout the territory and increased restrictions on the movement of Palestinian residents.
Violence over the weekend across several areas of the occupied West Bank even prompted condemnation from Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who accused settlers of harming Israel’s standing in the world. President Isaac Herzog called it the crossing of a red line
. US ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, who welcomed the Israeli leaders’ condemnation, stated, The half-million Israelis living peacefully … are most disgusted by a small group of thugs.
Broader West Bank Unrest and Unresolved Questions
In addition to the incident at Umm Al-Kheir, dozens of settlers attacked the West Bank village of Qusra on Saturday before the military was called to remove them. Foreign journalists were also injured by masked settlers in an attack in the West Bank town of Jalud.
An Israeli solidarity group active in the South Hebron Hills said occupiers had been harassing Palestinians in the area and trying to seize cameras and phones from people documenting the incident. While Joughin faced deportation, questions remain regarding accountability for the attacks across the region as illegal settlement outposts continue to expand and restrict Palestinian movement.
