Pressure mounts on Denmark after Denmark’s yes to EU defense union

Denmark chose to participate in EU security policy. The NATO country stands for close cooperation between the EU and the Atlantic alliance.

After Sweden and Finland, Denmark is also changing its security policy. On Tuesday, the population decided in a referendum on future participation in EU security policy. According to exit polls, around two-thirds of Danes voted yes. This ends the special regulation (“opt out”) that has existed since 1993.

Not only the social democratic head of government, Mette Frederiksen, but also ten others from the country’s 14 parties campaigned for approval. Resistance came only from the far right and far left edges. Frederiksen argued: “When the world changes, and like this time into something worse and more uncertain, Denmark must not stand still.”
