Starcloud co-founders Philip Johnston, Adi Oltean, and Ezra Feilden have formed a non-profit to launch the Fermi Explorer, a small spacecraft bound for Alpha Centauri. Planned for a 2029 launch, the mission aims to prove the feasibility of interstellar travel, though the craft is expected to take roughly 80,000 years to arrive.

The mission is a deliberate exercise in patience and symbolic achievement. Rather than attempting to reach another star system within a human lifetime—a goal that typically requires billion-dollar research and development into propulsion—the Fermi Explorer team is targeting a budget of less than $15 million. By accepting a journey that lasts nearly 80,000 years, the group avoids the need for futuristic propulsion systems, opting instead for existing technology and commercial rocket piggybacking.

The Fermi Explorer: Hardware and Orbit

The spacecraft itself is modest in scale: a 10cm cube weighing approximately 1 kilogram. The mission’s trajectory is not a straight line; the craft is expected to circle the sun for 12 years in an oval orbit.

To gain the necessary speed to escape the solar system, the craft will utilize the Oberth maneuver, firing its boosters as it approaches the sun. This process of gaining speed through multiple orbits will eventually push the craft toward escape velocity. Technical assessments suggest the Fermi Explorer should leave the solar system by the early 2040s.

The team is not planning for a functioning arrival.

Ticking Off the Fermi Great Filters

The mission is rooted in the Fermi Paradox—the contradiction between the high probability of extraterrestrial civilizations and the lack of evidence for them. A central theory in this paradox is the Fermi Great Filter, which posits that there is a barrier so difficult to overcome that intelligent life rarely survives long enough to be detected.

By simply launching a craft, the non-profit believes it can eliminate two specific theoretical filters: the idea that it is impossible for an intelligent species to leave their nearest stars, and the idea that all such species simply decide not to do so. The group stated on X that the mission is intended to make the idea of interstellar travel real and encourage humanity to confront these unanswered questions.

This approach marks a sharp pivot from previous interstellar ambitions. For example, the multi-billion-dollar Breakthrough Starshot project, which sought to use laser-based propulsion to reach Alpha Centauri in decades, collapsed in 2025 without any launches.

Crowdfunding and the Starcloud Connection

The mission is being driven by the founders of Starcloud, an orbital data center startup. While the Fermi Explorer is a non-profit venture, the founders’ commercial work involves putting data centers in space to power AI. Their commercial timeline includes the launch of the Starcloud-2 full commercial data center in 2027, following the 2025 launch of an Nvidia H100 GPU via Starcloud-1.

To fund the interstellar mission, the non-profit is using a crowdfunding model.

  • $10 donation: Name listed on the website as an official mission supporter.
  • $100 minimum: Name engraved on the spacecraft.

The team acknowledges that the Fermi Explorer will likely be the last craft to arrive at its destination. They anticipate that future advances in technology will allow humanity to build faster ships that will eventually overtake the Explorer. However, the founders argue that someone has to be first, and the act of launching could spark interest from better-funded groups.

This mission joins a very short list of human objects in interstellar space. Only Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 have achieved this, entering interstellar space in 2012 and 2018 respectively.
