The tech giant has made its latest hardware play in Berlin, displaying the device behind a glass case at the ongoing trade show. Scheduled to hit the Chinese market just two days prior to an anticipated Apple iPhone event, the new hardware bridges the physical gap between large book-style foldables and smaller flip-style devices.
Design and Hardware Specifications of the Xiaomi 18 Fold
The device breaks from standard proportions by adopting a shorter and wider aspect ratio. GSMArena reports the aspect ratio for the inner screen is supposed to be 2:1, which would make it shorter and wider than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, which utilizes a 4:3 inner screen. The exterior is protected by Dragon Crystal Glass 3.0 on its 5.38-inch cover screen. Inside, the 7.58-inch folding display utilizes a dual ultra-thin glass layer and a camera cutout in the upper right corner. This differs from the reported foldable iPhone, which is expected to have its inner screen hole-punch in the upper left.
A notable visual quirk involves the physical chassis: when opened, the corners are rounded, but when closed, two corners remain rounded while the opposing two are sharp. The device has been shown in a striking red color,
described by Mat Smith as an eye-catching shade of supercar red.
Under the hood, power comes from the company’s proprietary Xring O3 processor—which Xiaomi calls its Flagship AI SoC.
This homemade SoC combines CPU, GPU, NPU, and AI chipsets, suggesting the absence of Snapdragon or Mediatek silicon. The hardware is accompanied by 16 GB of LPDDR6 RAM and at least 256 GB of onboard storage. The operating system runs on HyperOS 4, built on top of Android 17, and includes an on-device MiMo AI model.
Leica-Optimized Optics and Battery Capacity
Photography capabilities stand out through a rear camera island featuring a Leica-optimized triple-camera system. The array houses a 200-megapixel main sensor with optical image stabilization (OIS), a 50-megapixel ultrawide camera, and a 50-megapixel telephoto lens offering 3.5x optical zoom. This 3.5x optical zoom is a feature noted as missing from key rivals, allowing the Xiaomi 18 Fold to surpass the camera versatility of the Galaxy Z Fold 8.
Energy demands are handled by a substantial 6000 mAh battery, which is 1200 mAh larger than the Samsung flagship. The system supports 67 W wired fast charging and 50 W wireless charging, alongside full IP68 water and dust resistance.
Strategic Timing Ahead of Apple and Global Availability Questions
The scheduling carries clear competitive weight. Xiaomi’s President of the mobile division, Mr. Lu Weibing, shared official renders of the device on Weibo and confirmed the official launch event in China for September 7, 2026. This positions the release just two days before Apple’s own launch event on September 9, 2027, where Apple is expected to launch the iPhone Ultra foldable.
While the hardware drew immediate comparisons to leaked renders of upcoming foldable iPhones due to its similar rounded corner profile and passport format, the Xiaomi 18 Fold would technically beat Apple to market with its wide foldable, although this is not Xiaomi’s first foldable device. While Apple’s A20 Pro chip and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip are mentioned as future benchmarks, the XRing O3 will be the primary driver for the Xiaomi device.
Pricing details and an official international rollout schedule will be revealed at the China presentation on September 7. It is currently unknown if or when the Xiaomi 18 Fold will become available in European and other global markets. Additionally, during its IFA 2026 showing, Xiaomi announced that it will launch its EVs in Europe.
