Researchers have identified 80,000-year-old unretouched triangular microlithic projectile points at the Obi-Rakhmat rock shelter in Uzbekistan, offering evidence that could rewrite the history of how Homo sapiens first settled in Europe.

Prehistoric timelines have long leaned on a framework built in Western Europe during the second half of the 19th century. Early models assumed a linear and Eurocentric progression, placing Cro-Magnons as descendants of Neanderthals to support ideas of regional civilizational superiority. Only a century later did scholars widely recognize the African origin of Homo sapiens alongside the technological and social traits defining the Western Upper Paleolithic.

Yet puzzles remain regarding how our ancestors colonized Western Eurasia more than 45,000 years ago. While the oldest evidence for Homo sapiens in Australia dates back about 65,000 years—predating European findings by 10 millennia—the early Upper Paleolithic sites in Europe do not align neatly with those in the Levant. Because Levantine evidence stems from older excavations or fails to fit a direct lineage, archaeologist Ludovic Slimak proposed a Central Asian origin in 2023, drawing fresh attention to the region’s deep Paleolithic record.

Central Asia has historically functioned as a geographical corridor for movement or as a refuge zone depending on climatic shifts. Among its notable sites is the Obi-Rakhmat rock shelter, discovered in 1962 and excavated under the leadership of Andrei Krivoshapkin. Situated at an altitude of 1,250 meters at the southwestern end of the Talassky Alatau range in the Tien Shan mountains, the location features a stratigraphic sequence spanning over 10 meters.

Deposits at the shelter date from approximately 80,000 to 40,000 years ago, yielding a consistent lithic industry composed of points, large blades, and bladelets. Although initially classified as part of the Initial Upper Paleolithic, the industry appears to derive from the Levantine Early Middle Paleolithic. Furthermore, a child’s skull remains discovered in a layer dating back roughly 70,000 years display a combination of Neanderthal and anatomically modern features, pointing toward potential hybridization.

Microlithic Projectile Points and Ballistic Constraints

Within the oldest stratigraphic layers of the Obi-Rakhmat site, an international multidisciplinary team identified tiny, unretouched, triangular projectile points among the lithic debris. Researchers verified their function by comparing macroscopic and microscopic impact marks against experimental reference data. Measuring less than 2 cm in width and weighing only a few grams, these brittle artifacts were unsuitable for heavy shafts.

The cutting edges match the diameter of arrow shafts documented ethnographically for low-poundage bows. Hand-thrown or held spears require mass for penetration and effectiveness, relying on robustness and impact force. In contrast, light projectiles shot from a distance achieve penetration through speed and sharpness.

These 80,000-year-old microlithic projectile points correspond directly in size to arrowheads produced by Homo sapiens 25,000 years later during an incursion into Neanderthal territory in the Rhône Valley. Published in the journal PLOS One, the findings provide a strong argument linking Central Asia to the revised narrative of early human expansion into Europe.
