Alternative for Deutschland has secured a historic 44.5 percent of the vote in Saxony-Anhalt’s state election, according to ARD projections on September 6, 2026. The far-right party emerged as the clear victor, though uncertainty remains over whether it can form a governing majority in eastern Germany.
Landslide Victory and the Question of a Majority
The far-right AfD has taken a commanding lead in Sunday’s state vote in eastern Germany, upending the political establishment. According to ARD projections, the party captured 44.5 percent of the vote. That performance leaves the Alternative für Deutschland far ahead of any rival, though it remains uncertain whether the party can govern alone without coalition partners.
