COPD Patients Benefit from Laughter Therapy

A clinical trial presented at the European Respiratory Society (ERS) conference in Barcelona, Spain, found that laughter therapy reduces breathing difficulties in COPD patients as effectively as traditional breathing exercises, according to a study reported by Europa Press. The study was presented at the ERS conference on September 7, as reported by Europa Press.

The research, conducted at the Bilkent Municipal Hospital in Ankara, Turkey, included 63 participants with COPD who received treatment there. One-third of the patients were randomly assigned to laughter therapy, one-third to lip-blowing breathing exercises, and one-third to a control group with no structured breathing exercises. Both intervention groups showed significant reductions in breathlessness compared to the control group, with effects lasting a month after the program ended. The study emphasized that laughter therapy offers a low-cost, accessible alternative to traditional exercises, which patients can practice at home without specialized equipment.

Patients in the laughter therapy group engaged in rhythmic clapping with vocal sounds, playful exercises like mimicking a motorcycle start or a lion’s roar, spontaneous laughter meditation, and relaxation with quiet breathing and smiling. These sessions, held three times weekly for eight weeks, were designed to improve respiratory function through controlled, deliberate breathing patterns and emotional engagement. Both groups received in-person instruction on how to perform the exercises and were supported via video calls and text messages. Before, during, and after the treatment, patients were evaluated on their breathing difficulties, general health, and daily care requirements.

The management of COPD requires more than just medication. Patients need a holistic approach that helps them cope with their symptoms, the physical burden of the disease, and its emotional and psychological impact. With this research, we wanted to explore if other simple and low-cost techniques could complement existing medical care, said Goncagul Aldan, a professor and nurse at Hacettepe University’s Faculty of Nursing. The study built on prior evidence suggesting that laughter therapy could benefit patients with chronic conditions by addressing both physical and emotional challenges.

The lip-blowing breathing technique, a well-established method for COPD patients to expel trapped air, was compared to laughter therapy. Both groups showed significant improvements in breathlessness, with no differences in the level of daily care required. Researchers noted that laughter therapy’s accessibility and low cost could make it a viable alternative or supplement to conventional treatments. The results of this study demonstrate that both lip-blowing breathing exercises and laughter therapy can significantly reduce the severity of dyspnea in COPD patients, and this effect persisted even one month after completing the program, the authors stated.

COPD, a leading cause of disability and mortality worldwide, affects millions by causing chronic breathlessness. Current treatments focus on medication and pulmonary rehabilitation, but this study highlights the potential of non-pharmacological, patient-led interventions. The researchers emphasized that laughter therapy’s simplicity allows patients to practice it at home without specialized equipment, making it an attractive option for resource-limited settings. Both interventions showed promising results in improving overall health, suggesting that laughter therapy could be a valuable area for further research alongside lip-blowing exercises, the study authors concluded.

While the study does not replace medical treatment, it underscores the importance of integrating patient-centered, low-cost strategies into COPD management. Readers are advised to consult qualified healthcare professionals for personalized guidance, as the findings are specific to the study’s design and population. Further research is needed to confirm long-term benefits and optimal implementation methods.
