Ahead of its major product showcase, Apple pushed out the iOS 26.6.2 software update for iPhone to resolve a specific operational hurdle. You can install iOS 26.6.2 on your iPhone from the Software Update screen inside Settings. According to official release notes from the company, this update fixes an issue that prevents downloading a software update over a cellular connection. Alongside the iPhone deployment, Apple has released iPadOS 26.6.2 for iPad with the exact same bug fix.
The Cellular Download Fix Arrives Ahead of iOS 27
The timing of releasing iOS 26.6.2 so close to iOS 27’s anticipated release makes sense considering the bug fix it introduces. If iOS 26.6.1 didn’t let users install iOS 27 over a cellular connection, that could be a big headache for Apple and its users next week. By releasing this update now, many iPhones will hopefully have the needed fix in advance of trying to install the much more exciting iOS 27 update. So it’s not a particularly noteworthy release, but it’s a timely one ahead of iOS 27 and its many new features debuting soon. Apple announced iOS 27 at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June, and the tech giant has since released multiple beta versions of the software. The betas have brought Siri AI and a handful of other features to the iPhones of developers and beta testers, and you can expect many of those capabilities to land on your iPhone soon.
Apple’s Cupertino Keynote and the Executive Transition
Apple will hold its biggest event of the year in Cupertino, California on Wednesday, Sept. 9. The keynote is just the first part of a series of events which will culminate with the new products including the iPhone 18 Pro going on sale. The Steve Jobs Theater will be the venue and on Sept. 9, we’ll finally get to see Apple’s new products. Pacific, 1 p.m. Eastern and 6 p.m. BST (that’s British Summer Time in the U.K.). The keynote that will see the launch of three iPhones, two Apple Watches and perhaps new AirPods will take place at Apple’s HQ. The expectation is that the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and the first foldable iPhone will be unveiled alongside the Apple Watch Series 12, Apple Watch Ultra 4 and possibly new AirPods. Foldable iPhone: Apple Tested New Pencil But It Won’t Launch On Sept. 9. That’s the latest list of products, and we’ll learn the answers to a bunch of questions: what will the foldable be called (and it may not be what you’re expecting), what colors will the new iPhones be, will the foldable be on time and, crucially, how much will the new handsets cost? Mark Gurman at Bloomberg commented on Sept. 6 about the keynote itself, answering a question of whether the Executive Chairman Tim Cook will feature in the video. Everything I've heard indicates that Cook will be in attendance in the VIP section for the Apple event screening next Wednesday, but that he will not be in the event video itself,
he said. That chimes with my belief — Tim Cook has never been engaged in upstaging anyone else, his deferential modesty and his deep passion to do what’s right for Apple would preclude him trying to steal the limelight. Such a move would make him shudder, I think. It makes sense,
Gurman went on: “Apple has carefully orchestrated this transition to make Ternus the face of the foldable iPhone and all the new products to come. Putting Cook in the presentation would just undermine that. So, no, Cook will not be in the video. When it comes to product introductions, it’s the John Ternus era.”
A Shift in the Pre-Order Calendar
The next big event in the calendar is the opening of pre-orders, and it looks like this year that will happen a few hours later than usual. Pre-orders routinely begin on the Friday after the keynote, at 5 a.m. Pacific, but things are going to be different this year. Just as the keynote was bumped from its routine Tuesday slot because Labor Day falls on Monday, Sept. 7, and Apple never holds an event on the day after Labor Day, so the pre-order schedule has changed. The reason isn’t hard to see: Friday is Sept. 11, and not just any Sept. 11 but the 25th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attack. So, out of respect, Apple is avoiding the date. But only just. Instead of opening pre-orders at 5 a.m., it’s predicted to do so in the first seconds of Saturday, Sept. 12, that is, at 12 midnight Pacific. This works out to 3 a.m. Eastern, 8 a.m. U.K.
Tracking the iOS 27 Rollout
So far, Apple has only said that it will release the update to the general public this fall, which isn’t the most helpful timeframe. If we look at past Apple events in September and earlier iOS releases, though, we can see a release pattern. Apple usually releases iOS versions a few days after the company’s September event, and I expect that trend to hold this year. Based on those trends and a little psychic peering, I believe Apple will release iOS 27 on Monday, Sept. 14. I was right about iOS 26’s release in 2025, iOS 18’s release in 2024 and iOS 17’s release in 2023, so I’m sure I can keep this streak going. Usually Apple releases the next iOS update soon after the September event and the company is set to hold its Surprise and shine
event on Wednesday, Sept. 9. While Apple doesn’t usually announce the release of iOS versions, the company has been pretty consistent with its release schedule over the years. After most of Apple’s September events, the company releases the next iOS within a week. In 2025, for example, Apple’s event was held on Sept. 9 and the company released iOS 26 on Sept. 15. And in 2024 Apple’s event was held on Sept. 9 and iOS 18 was released seven days later on Sept. 16. There’s only been one year over the past decade where it took longer than a week for Apple to release the next iOS version – 2019. That year, Apple released the next iOS version nine days after its September event. In that same timeframe, most of the iOS releases were either five, six or seven days after the September event. Apple has also released the past five iOS versions on the Monday following its September events. This could be the new norm, with Apple releasing future iOS versions on the Monday after its September events moving forward. So it’s most likely that Apple will release iOS 27 on the following Monday, Sept. 14.
